I could be corrected but I think the term "Hail Mary" in football refers to a lay-out or pattern of people... Not what you are thinking. Try putting "hail mary" and Football in a search and see what you get.
When I was a kid (a female one who did not play much football) my brothers called the play... a pattern they stood in while throwing or catching the ball, a hail mary. (But that might have been just in my experience.
I did look it up in Wikipedia...
A Hail Mary pass or Hail Mary play in American football is a forward pass made in desperation, with only a very small chance of success. The typical Hail Mary is a very long forward heave thrown at or near the end of a half where there is no realistic possibility for any other play to work, though the most famous were thrown at the end of a game. The phrase derives from the name of a prominent Roman Catholic prayer to the Virgin Mary. The success of this play is unlikely due to the general inaccuracy of the pass and the defensive team's preparedness for the play -- the pass is thrown and a prayer is said.

I think its just a figure of speech. I also think God has a sense of humor. My mom once said that feet are proof God has a sense of humor. I think she's right and by the same token I picture God shaking his head laughing - even when people think its serious.
Just like a kid playing some 'serious' game - lost in their imagination. The parents of said child remember, laugh and are amazed all at the same time. The kid looks up and wonders what's so funny.
My mom told me that all parents have a ridge along their inner cheek (I admit she may have been exaggerating; non-the-less). This is because as a parent, you have to maintain a serious image because you are trying to teach your children even though whatever it was they did wrong is so funny, you want to laugh. She told me there were times when I was a kid that she would have to induce pain by bitting her cheeks to the point of bleeding to prevent that laughter. She had an image to uphold, but has a sense of humor at the same time.
I picture God to be in a similar situation. God is Man's parent, and I would think many of the things Man does are really funny from God's perspective.
Examples -
1.) Referring to a desperation pass as a hail mary.
2.) Seeing people get upset by the use of the term hail mary in reference to said desperation pass.
3.) Watching one of the kids freak out and say "but you don't know what dad meant when he said that - he told me and only me the secret!" when another one of the kids tells the first kid to lighten up.
4.) The consistency with which I type 'thing' when I mean 'think' or 'id' when I mean 'is' - particularly when discussing Freudian psychology.
I'm not God, but considering having to wait for 12 billion years for the good stuff to start happening, I would be laughing my *** off with how we think - just like a parent does internally when disciplining their children.

Again, What did the Angel of the Lord said to Mary?
This is what the bible says, "And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women." Luke 1:28
Notice that the Biblical text does not say, "Hail Mary full of grace..." This is the Catholic and Orthodox misinterpretation of the Greek text.
God gave this special honor to Mary to bear the Messiah. To Grace...not "full of grace."
It was God induing Mary with this special honor of giving birth to the Messiah. Mary was not full of grace but rather highly favored.
The Bible says that Jesus was full of grace and truth, not Mary.
It is written, And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. Luke 1:29
This verse alone proves that Mary was not expecting such a salutation.
Why pray to Mary at all? Does the Holy Scriptures sanction such prayers to Mary?
It is sinful for us to ask Mary to pray for us when the Bible clearly teaches that Jesus Christ is the only Mediator between God and man.
Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ has been accorded a special place of devotion especially in the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches. This mean, It's not for true Christians.

Hail Mary is a Bible quote and a prayer.
I do not know of any Catholics who are offended by the term "Hail Mary Pass."
Hail Mary Full of grace, the Lord is with you. (These are the words the angel Gabriel said to Mary, a Bible quote.)
Blessed are thou among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. (This is Mary's cousin Elizabeth's greeting, another bible quote.)
Holy Mary, (The angel Gabriel said she was full of grace and Elizabeth said she was blessed.)
Mother of God, (the Bible says Mary is the mother of Jesus Christ, God the Son)
Pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. (A simple request to pray for us.)
Amen.
With love in Christ.

Hail Mary must hurt THE GOD!
Using his moms name, to worship, instead of THE TRUE GOD, is blasphemy.
