I was just talking to a friend of mine and he had a file that he now says is gone from the computer. I suggested the Windows "Search" function and apparently they have already tried it. Do you have any other suggestions?

The windows search function should find anything. Just make sure you tell it to find hidden and system files just in case a file somehow got misplaced in a strange place. Try not to limit yourself on the name in case it is spelled wrong. Use the least number of characters possible that will not return a huge number of matches.
For example if a file is named bigapple.txt I would just search for big.
