They seem so common these days, they don't really set you apart. I liked them when I was younger, even got one on my arm, but now I kind of see them as just an elaborate stain on an what was an already beautiful piece of art. Your thoughts?

No offense to aspiring tattoo artists, those with tatoos, or established inkers. Obviously not the right choice for me to get tatted, just wondering about other view points from the "answer" community.

I totally agree with Kristina. Some custom jobs are amazing in their clarity and detail. There are some incredible artists out there.

In hindsight, I could have been a little more tactful with the way I asked that question. I really didn't mean to offend, and certainly don't look to judge others.

i never looked at tattoos as a way to stand out or to be an individual. the people who get them to be "different" aren't really accomplishing anything. everybody is the same as somebody tho. there are tons of people who don't have tattoos that are the same as all of the other peopl who don't have tattoos.
i got my tattoos for me and i don't think they are a "stain" on my skin. i think they are art that adds to the beauty of my already beautiful skin. tattoos are different for everybody and it doesn't really matter if other people understand why i have them.

I feel its a great way to express something permanent. An by permant I mean something that you will always have, because well a tatoo is permanent. I decided Iw anted oen when I was about 20...picked it out and waited about a year. I figured if I still wanted it in a year I'd do it. I got a Celtic 4leaf clover to represent what had always been my favorite symbol of luck and my irish heritage. The second is a scorpion with the Operation Iraqi Freedom medal colors. I will always be a veteran and always be irish. Two things I am proud of.
One thing is to get them where they are easily covered up. It can be a career ender (before it even begins) I have mine on my tricep and on my upper back. It cool, but be responsible.

I think that they still show your personality provided that it is of something that has meaning to the individual wearing the tattoo. Not a big fan of flash art - where u just go to a tattoo studio and choose something off the wall and get it inked on you because you think it's "cool" - I don't like the ones that people get just to get a tattoo. I think that people look fine without them and people look fine with them. I really like to see custom work though...it's pretty amazing to see what some artists can do...

I love tattoos. True tattoo artists create some beautiful work and I am more than willing to be their canvas. Tattoos to me are like revealing my history to the world without having to say anything. Tattoos are like snowflakes, meaning even if they are becoming more common no two are identical. Tattoos are what have made me comfortable in my own skin. It's impossible for me to not feel sexy when I'm covered in artwork. I'd say a majority of my tattoos were a form of healing for me. They are a way to honor and remember my past.
Now I've noticed a lot of you mentioning the aging process as reasons not to get tattoos. I'd just like to add, that I highly doubt anyone's skin is going to be looking good at 60 or 80 anyways. Old and saggy is old and saggy, regardless of whether it's tattooed or not.
I realize I'm very lucky since I live in a city that's very accepting, but when I travel and people tell me how I'll regret it later, I get really frustrated. Why don't you look at your own "flaws" before telling me mine, starting with your assumption that I am as indecisive in my decision making as you.

I see so many great and personal tattoos. I love it!
Its awesome to see guys and gals with custom done sleeves and meaningful pieces of artwork. I'm glad this world is becoming so colorful. The only tattoos I tend to dislike are the ones that are meaningless and trendy (i.e. getting tribal or kanji because it looks cool...not because its actually part of your heritage or holds a high significance to your life. If you don't live in the country, don't speak the language and can't find it in your blood line...don't do it.)
My tattoos are just for me, but they are also personal and special to remind me of why I'm the person I am today. I also love the process and history of tattoos, so its a huge passion.

I think that's a great way to look at them. So many people really do get them because they are desperate for attention or just want to do what others are doing. I'm not completely against them, and I feel that there are times when they are perfectly acceptable. If done to commemorate the loss of a loved one or something along those lines, there is nothing wrong with them.

I think if you wanna get a tattoo, you should be allowed to get one.
I think it sets you apart if it's a really interesting tattoo. Something for a loved one that just passed
our grandmother died and my mom is thinking about getting a tatoo of her when she was young, maybe around 17 when she was really pretty
my mom's already got 7 tattoos and her nose, nipple, tounge, ears, and ....hmm.. i know she's got other places pierced but i can't remember where

Im Covered in tattoos and im a woman. Each one of my tattoos , i love , and elaborate on that exact time of my life. I'm only 21 now, but i know when im 60 years old, my tattoos will still be special and will still mean something to me.
When you get tattooed, its something you have to prepare yourself to be dedicated too for the rest of your life, and I totally prepared myself, and surpirisngly I ve had NO negative comments from anyone, people stop me on a daily basis to talk about my tattoos ... Its nice

I think that just like any other kind of body mod, its a personal choice and you shouldn't be judged by whether or not you have one. Personally I like mine but tattoos is a very large subject. I like tattoos that are personal and well drawn. A poorly done one just tells me the person was being cheap and didn't put any thought into it.
