Santa Monica is nicer that Venice, Venice Beach can be iffy, bad neighborhoods...
Where ever you stay, when you make reservations, call the local number and ask the person who answers the phone about the area....
I live in Anaheim, close to Disneyland, and some of the places to stay near Disneyland are bad neighborhoods...so its best to ask.
If you are doing the tourist thing, places to go, the boardwalk on venice is nice to see wierdos, the santa monica pier is nice, the 3rd street promande is nice, and Hollywood is close by too. Go to Hollywood and Highland, you can sight see, Grahmans chinese theater the stars on the hollywood walk of fame...
if you are sure of dates, go to tvtix and see if there are any tv show filmings you can be in the audience.
have fun...

Santa Monica is pretty expensive, not that Venice is cheap, but cheaper. Venice is a little more seedy. I was just there over the New Years and stayed in Marina Del Rey, just south of Venice. It's a little quieter and less expensive. Venice is a 5 minute walk and a 2 minute bike ride from Marina Del Rey. We rode our bikes all the way to the Santa Monica pier from the hotel. It was a really nice ride. Try the Marriot Marina Del Rey.

They're right next to each other- it's six of one, half a dozen of the other. Santa Monica has nicer (and more expensive) hotels, but Venice is, well, Venice!

Santa Monica- Venice can be a little on the sleazy side, although you should definitely visit there. Have fun!

Venice (Venezia) actually needs no introduction, see getting there with hotelbye . This city is a fabled destination for centuries. Only the name Venice is sufficient to conjure up a number of images, even for individuals who have not even set base in Italy. From gondoliers in striped jerseys to the Rialto and the Bridge of Sighs, criminal balls, wonderful barges, courtesans in gondolas and crumbling palaces facing roads made from water Venice is an amazing city. When the only real connection across the Grand Canal, Rialto Bridge scars the location of the island's first settlement, named Rivus Altus and is currently one of the lots of place that Venice has to offer.
