there is no "best" first time tattoo except that it is important for your tattoo to be done by a talented artist and that it be something that you will like. that is not a trend or a fad but something that actually has some kind of value to you.

Tattoos are extremely personal. Friends may come and go, but a tattoo is forever.
Don't get one just to get one. That's one of the dumbest ideas I've ever heard, yet so many kids run to the tattoo parlor as soon as they turn 18. I'm 21 now, and have been getting tattoos since I was 16. Each one is very unique and holds special symbolism to me, only. No regrets.
Just don't do it to be cool, because that sounds like what you're trying to do.

well if you want it to be meaningful to you, random people can't really help you out much.
i just got a swallow on my hip, and i love it.. old school stuff always seems to work well, because it doesn't really ever go out of style.
i wouldn't advise getting anything in kanji if you don't speak chinese or japanese, because people who do speak it will totally look down on you. also, they're easy to mess up and you might end up with a typo or an entirely different meaning.
there are tons of interesting tattoos you can browse through at www.bmezine.com. it might give you some ideas:)
good luck on finding something!!

...if you haven't thought about it long and are just getting something for the sake of getting tattooed, don't do it. You don't deserve a tattoo. Tattoos are meaningful and you shouldn't just walk in and choose something off the wall or pick a Kanji symbol if you're not Japanese and don't speak the language. I had been thinking about my tattoos for ten years when I finally turned eighteen and got them. People like you are the reason tattoos are getting such a bad reputation.

Tats are meant to be memorable. You are forever going to remember the shop, who you went with, everything. Check the walls of the shop or their book. There will be alot of ideas. My first was a yellow rose on my right shoulder with my late husband's initials below it. Go for a small rose or a butterfly or maybe a 4-leaf clover.

ya, i really have to advise you to get the tattoo when you guys know what you want. there is no point in going on her 18th birthday for the fun of saying that if you are just going to regret getting something in haste.
there is no way for us strangers to know what would be good for YOU. figure that out before you go.
