Animal shelters are the best place. The dogs and cats need to be loved. Many of them will be put down, and even if their not they often lead bad lives. You are great for thinking of the shelter.

ABSOLUTELY!! Shelters and rescuers are the best place to get a dog. I have had many shelter dogs, and I currently have two shelter mutts: they have all been wonderful, beautiful, loving, unique dogs. If this is your first dog, or if you have never before adopted a shelter dog, you should try to shop around a bit for a shelter or rescue (if there happens to be more than one in your area and there usually are several: check out www.petfinder.com and type in your zip code). Look for a shelter that is willing to help you find a dog that is right for you. Often, the shelter workers get to know something about the temperment of various breeds, mixes, and/or the dogs that they happen to have at their shelter (rescues are great for this -- rescue groups often charge a bit more money than a shelter, but it's almost always much less than you'd pay for a dog from a breeder or a pet store -- btw, never, ever buy a dog from a pet store!). Most good shelters and rescuers will work with you, if you talk to them; tell them what you are looking for, what your needs and fears are. They (the shelter or rescue group) want you to be happy with your new companion, so that the dog doesn't end up *back* in the shelter. Shelters also will have puppies, young dogs, middle age dogs and older dogs. If you are a first-time dog owner, you might want the shelter to help you pick out a dog that is already housebroken (every dog -- wherever you get it -- will probably need *some* work in this department), that is gentle and that seems to be at least moderately trained.

An animal shelter or animal rescue group is the BEST place to get a dog. They have all different kinds of dogs, including mixed, and pure breed dogs. When you are getting a dog from a shelter you are saving some money by not getting one from a breeder, but you are also Saving a dog's life! Shelters and rescues are so over populated with animals, and they NEED people to help out by choosing to adopt rather then getting one from a breeder or pet store. And most shelters now get the animals all caught up on shots and other regular health needs, and a lot of times they will get them spayed or nuetered also. Adopting is the best way to go when getting a new dog. Check out www.petfinder.com to find dog in your area that are in need of a good home!! I'm sure you'll find one that you like. And not all shelters are on this site, so you can visit the local animals in your area also. Good Luck!

Yes it is. For one thing, before the animal can leave the shelter, they have to have all their shots. They are generally in good health or the shelter would have them put down. They are always clean and have no fleas when they leave the shelter. Where on the other hand, if you purchase an animal from a private party you are hoping that the dog is healthy and clean. That is always the gamble you take with buying from a private party. The shelters are your best way to go and they also have a large variety to choose from too. Good luck and I hope you find the kind of dog you are looking for. Let me know how it turns out.

Yes! Just be sure to research the breeds of dogs that you might be interested in- don't just get the one that is the cutest! Consider what age dog you want -older dogs sometimes need less exercise, younger ones may need more, (depends on breed too) etc. Also, spend some time with the dog. Most shelters have play areas where you and the dog can have a chance to "meet." Ask as many questions as you need to! This is a lifetime (the dog's) commitment not to be taken lightly! Good luck to you!

Most definitely. They usually are already fixed and had their shots too. Support a no-kill shelter (like humane society). Talk to the staff at the animal shelter about what dog will fit in with your living situation and your lifestyle. Mutts tend to live longer healthier lifes than pure-breeds. Good luck and hope you enjoy your new friend!

It's the BEST place! All 4 of mine are shelter dogs and I wouldn't trade a one of them. All the poor dogs that wind up in shelters deserve a chance at a good home. And they are grateful to get one. Most of them have never known any kindness and respond beautifully to it. If you are thinking of a specific breed, there are also many breed specific rescues out there.

You don't BUY a dog. You ADOPT it. The fees are for spay/neuter and shots that the animal requires to stay healthy. Certainly, go to a shelter. There are many animals that need to be adopted. But please, never, ever BUY a dog. The only exception I have to that rule is if you are getting a pure breed for show.
