I had a total thyroidectomy in 1981 because of goiter,Hashimotos disease, and metestactic papillary cancer. After numerous body scans, drinking all that radio-active junk and many adjustments of dosage, I had many years of relative peace as far as medical issues. Then one and a half years ago I started on coumiden(a blood thinner) due to atrial fibrillation. Synthroid and the coumiden interact so now it seems either my coumiden is off or my synthroid level is off. It is rare that I can go more than a week without needing a blood test. I feel like a pin cushion! But at least the cancer had not spread too much and that is not a concern now. Because of the synthroid level fluctuating, so does my weight. Maybe you and the other answerers and myself can start so type of on-line group. I would be interested in learning more about the other health issues you and others have run into that are linked to thyroid trouble.

I had my thyroid taken out due to cancer in May 2006. I had to do a lot of scans, iodine uptake scans, and since my Dr. found a lump in my Lymp node, they took it out and found out it was from my thyroid. Once the lump was taken out it was sent to Mayo for a 2nd opinion. Cat scans, the works. Then I had to go to another hospital and take a radio-active pill and had to be in quarantine for 3 days. I've had good days and bad days as far as being tired. I go for blood tests every 6-8 weeks so they can adjust my medicine (synthroid), actually it is the generic form, they still do not have my dose right yet, they said it could be awhile yet. I lost a lot of weight, and I actually just got back from the Dr. just a bit ago. Now she says I am hyper-thyroid and she told me to stop taking them, I got down to 98 pds.!! So I have to do more blood tests, and cat scan again too. At this point I don't know what is going on and they can not tell till the blood tests results come back, then the results of the other scans, which I can't have till I am off of the medicine for 2 weeks, and go from there!! Keep in touch with your Dr!! That's what we pay them for, but sometimes it's nice to be able to talk to someone that has been there!! During this past year, I lost my mom due to kidney failure, so my nerves are shot, she was only 68. I made the appt. to see my Dr. because I thought my anti-depressants weren't working, I keep waking up during the night, etc. so I guess you have to listen to your body and write it down before you go in!! She says I am hyer-thyroid now and that is what is messing with my other meds. If you would like to ask me any questions that you may have you are more than welcome to email me. Everyone is different, but if I know I will tell you, if not, we can find out!!!! We have to keep the faith!!! Good Luck.
