yes! I know this from expierence. My son was born sept.2004, I had to have his ss# to claim him on that years taxes. If you go down to the social security office, you file for the card and they will give you a receipt with the number on it. It will work for now.

If you file your return claiming your child as a dependent and do not provide her social security number on the return, the dependency exemption will be disallowed.

You have two options. You could file your income tax return without claiming your child as a dependent. After you receive their social security number, you could then amend your return on Form 1040X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. You have three years from the later of the due date of the return or from the date the return was filed to amend the return.

The other option is to file a Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. This would give you an additional six months to file your return; by then you should have your child's social security number.

Yes it is required to claim the child as a dependent. If it was applied for in the hospital, which usually is the case, then you will probably have it soon.

IT WOULD BE CLOSE -- MY DAUGHTER AND SON IN LAW JUST HAD A CHILD BORN ON 29 DEC 2006-- THEY LIVE IN PITTSBURGH PA -- AND ASKED MY SISTER THE SAME QUESTION....MY SISTER HAS WORKED FOR SOCIAL SECURITY ( OR SO-SO SECURITY AS WE JEST) SINCE AUGUST OF 1976 AND SHE TOLD THEM NOT TO WORRY AS IT TAKES EIGHT TO TWELVE WEEKS TO GET A NEW SSN -- AND THEIR W-2's WILL BE COMING 31JAN07 LIKE EVERYONE ELSE's..AND THEY'LL PROBABLY FILE AS SOON AS THEY TEAR OPEN THE W-2 ENVELOPES, TO AVOID THE RUSH..... SO FILE AND PUT "SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER APPLIED FOR AND NOT YET RECEIVED" UNDER THE SPOT WHERE THE BABY'S SSN WOULD GO -- THERE ARE SEVERAL LINES FOR ADDITIONAL DEPENDENTS TO WRITE THIS IN --

BUT TO KEEP THEM HONEST -- THEY SHOULD GO TO S/S BEFORE 31 JANUARY (OR THEIR ACTUAL DATE OF FILING THEIR RETURNS) AND APPLY FOR THE BABY'S OWN NUMBER -- IN CASE SOMEONE ASKS LATER -- THEY WILL HAVE A DATED APPLICATION, MARKED BEFORE THE DATE THEY SIGNED ON THEIR RETURNS...

You still haven't received their ss card yet? It only took 8 weeks to get our sons'. You should call the nearest ss office and find out what's holding it up.
