OMG I heard some pretty good sugestions (especially tomato soup and sour cream) but no ane has used the real one, the one that every mexican cookbook says to do......Lime Juice!! A little lime juice not only adds a nice flavour but it recues the heat without changing the chili too much.

Serve over spaghetti or rice. The kids won't care if you serve on top of some garlic bread which would be tasty.
Also you can dilute by adding some things you might have in the kitchen. Add more hamburger and beans. Have heard that adding raw potatoes and cooking until they are cooked thru will take up some of the heat. Also you can thin out the heat with beef gravy or beef broth and then adjust other seasonings. Adding the gravy or broth will make it runny so then you counter that by adding flour or corn starch to thicken it back up.
You could also try serving Bread, Corn Bread or Tortillas and employ the take a bite of chili and then a bite of bread approach.
Don't have kids but have had things turn out too spicy for my tender tongue. Have been there and not wanted to throw out food and see it wasted.

Either double the recipe or Divide the chili in halves. Set into different pots. Take 1/2 and put it into a strainer and rinse it all off with water. Replace the unseasoned part back with the seasoned part and you will probably have to add more water and or tomato sauce.
You can keep cutting the recipe until it becomes acceptable for you all.

Just add a little sour cream, or throw in one half of an apple. The apple soaks up the salt-based spices, and sour cream tones it down.

add a can of condensed Campbell's Tomato Soup (do not add the water or milk) Let it simmer 5-10 minutes. Then add one of the following to taste: Shredded sharp cheddar cheese; riccota cheese; Philly cream cheese; sour cream. (Anything that is creamy will tone down the spice.) (add to individual servings.)

Just before the stage where you put in the spices, scoop out the kids portion, and cook that portion without the hot pepper sauce.

while you have it simmering on the stove, stir in about a cup of milk for every 6 servings you are cooking. that will help to neutralize some of the spiciness.

add a couple can's of tomato sauce or campbells tomatoe soup or if you don't have that throw in some ketchup to make it sweeter and take out the spicyness

Add sour cream.
Or don't add all the spicy seasonings.
