I agree with curious_One. Rather than "throwing" parts at it in hopes of fixing the problem, you would be further ahead, taking it to the Ford dealer, to have them run an EEC test to DIAGNOSE the cause of the miss. If you choose not to have the dealer perform the repair, that's entirely up to you. However, the Ford dealer uses IDS to run a "power balance" test to determine if it's caused by, a faulty injector, faulty spark plug, faulty COP (coil-on-plug) or a base engine concern (low compression etc.) This test would lead to the cause much quicker (and less expensive than replacing unecessary parts) than guessing. Your '01 Escape does NOT have a distributor or spark plug wires, by the way. Hope this helps.

There are many things that can cause a miss.

Unless you want to chance replacing a bunch of good parts you should find a shop that can do diagnostics and let you know exactly what is wrong with it. Many times it can be cheaper than replacing a lot of stuff. Ask friends or neighbors for advise about which shops they use and try to find one you can trust and have faith that they will fix it right for you.

may be a defective starter/ solinoid.. If it replace into the alternator, the motor vehicle might initiate the warning lighting fixtures may be on the sprint each and all of the time and the 1st signes may be as your utilising alongside the radio wouold fade out, then the motor vehicle might scale lower back out and no capacity in any respect...then you truly wait and the battery might get well, and the motor vehicle might restart.. yet might purely run for a shorter distance. each and every nighttime you may might desire to recharge the battery and interior the morning the motor vehicle might initiate first time each and each time. So i think of fixing the alt replace right into a waist of pennies. perchance in case you could upload if the motor vehicle actuatly turns over once you place the important in and attempt to start it.. or if each and every thing is ineffective?, while the engine wont initiate- does the radio paintings superb?. If it replace right into a gasoline pump i might think of it might turn over and slutter to existence with what's interior the carb/injection equipment

The plug wires may be old, brittle or otherwise defective. Your injectors may need cleaning. (Sometimes this calls for a shop cleaning where they disconnect your gas tank and use stronger solvents than you can put in the tank yourself.) A power coil may be defective.

If it is missing while driving, and not just idle, consider when (if) the fuel filter was last changed. Fuel rail pressure may be low or the fuel rail regulator may not be maintaining the right pressure.

If it's doggin or ideling up and down it could be a bad fuel injector or it could be one of many other sensers. be a good idea to have it put on a diagnostic machine, or for a couple a hundred or less, buy yourself a plug in tester at any good auto parts store. good luck.

Take it back to where you had the plugs installed and tell them it's still not right.

If you've never done it before then I'd look at replacing the fuel filter.
