Region 1 is US and it will say it on the box. Region 2 is what can be played in the UK. Not sure if you can play region 1 without some fantastic equipment.

Many older DVD players have a built-in manufacturers 'hack' that will allow you to make your DVD player Region free i.e. it will play any region DVD. Look up the model number on the 'net.

Most DVD players sold in the last couple of years are region free anyway. This is because the manufacturers didn't agree with the Region coding in the first place, but had it forced upon them by the movie moguls. You'd be very unlucky to buy a 'Region 2 only' DVD player nowadays.

The Region of a DVD disc is listed on the box.

There is a way however I wouldnt recommend it , if you have a pc with a dvd drive you can change the region of this drive through its properties , the region 1 dvd will then play however to view any other dvd's you have to change the region back to region 2 to view them , the problem is that you can only change region a limited number of times before your dvd rom drive locks to the last selected region.
When buying online always click the more information tab , you will generally find which region it is in there , hope this helps
