I think it's Latin.

That appears to be from The Mezzotint by M.R. James, 1904 - it means "the last hope of the family". The man in the story was the last male heir in the family; since he had no children, and no other relatives, he was the last of his line - the family and its name ended when he died.

"The last hope of (his) family / (his) race" (depending on how you translate "gens" which can mean both)
