I cook everything with heat. Sometimes I use a microwave and sometimes I use the stove, but I only cook with heat.
Pretty soon when global warming takes over we can cook food on the hood of our cars. That'll be fun. ;-)

Buy your self a Better Homes & Gardens cook book (they have the red & white checkered cover).
I have several cook books but this is the one I refer to time after time because it has information on so many things that you just wouldn't know unless you have lots of experience or had taken a cooking class.
It has a cooking dictionary... describes such things as julianned, blanched, braised, roux, etc.
It has a section on produce telling you what to look for when shopping for specific produce (like having glossy skin or making sure the stem is on or choosing an item that is heavy for it's size, etc).
A section on herbs describing the flavors of each, what's best dried or fresh & what dishes they are best suited for.
It has a section that shows a side of beef & pork & what cuts come from what part of the animal & what cooking methods are appropriate for that specific cut in order to get the best results.
This book is dinfinitely the most valuable tool in my kitchen, plus it does have a lot of great recipes (& they make a fabulous gift for a college student or newlywed). I believe they just put out a new edition!

Heat is usually the kiddie for the cooking thing.
Saying that i note that others have come up with the same revelation - so heres the twist...
Acid is also good (not the halucagen) lemon & lime juice 'cook' as in Ceviche, as is salt.
for the truly global cooking experience i would recommend some large scale nuclear weapon use which should cook everything to a nice crisp.

If you really want to know how to cook everything then get a copy of The Larousse Gastronomique. The edition I looked at even included a recipe for elephant's foot. If you are planning an exotic menu then this is the book for you!
If you want more everyday help then get a general cookbook or a beginners cookbook as there are lots of good ones. Check a local bookstore or online booksellers for reviews.

That depends, what are you trying to cook?

Mark Bittman has a book called "How to Cook Everything" -- it doesn't have absolutely everything, but it very reliable, very clear and has _almost_ everything.
