If you still have the file, there should be a method to convert the works format to raw .txt (text) so you can view what is remaining in a simple text editor such as Notepad.

You would need to consult the Microsoft website, to see what file conversion tools are available for MS Works.

There are probably numerous other 3rd party programs (some free, some not) that can convert the Works format.

I still suggest scouring your hard drive for .tmp files, or other temporary files that may contain your data.

try restarting your machine, but selecting start, turn off computer, restart. If that does not work you can press (at the same time) Ctrl, Alt, Delte keys. and then select restart from the shut down menu. No go there you can simply hold the "on" button until the computer shuts off.

You said you have tried other programs and this paper is so important why not include some details, what other programs did you try, how did you try to use them? what do you mean they did not work?

try installing www.openoffice.org and using that software that is like word/works to open and edit.

by the way you should still be able to open the file using another program by right clicking on the file, selecting open with and then select wordpad. This will open a plain version that you could paste into works and and then save again as something else.

Try to open it in wordpad, as i know, they are all driven from the same interface, that means they can all work on the minimum requirements, so i think if you opened it in wordpad it will display the text in the file (better than nothing you know).

Recovery programs may work as well. Check this out http://www.officerecovery.com/works/

Thanks.

That's a pretty big problem you have. I haven't used Microsoft Word for a while, but I remember it has a feature that let's you recover files if a crash occurs.

Btw this might help you http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/ms_office2000/111001
