"* You should consider your pet to be "in season" for 21 days: 7 days coming into heat, 7 days in heat, 7 days going out. Though conception is most likely during the middle 7 days, Mother Nature doesn't always follow the rules. Confine your pet for the entire 3 weeks."

On average for any breed of dog it's three weeks...one week coming in, one week in, and one week going out. The one week coming in the males won't really want anything to do with them, but if they start sniffing around, she'll usually be kinda bitchy and run them off. The second week is usually when they bleed, and every male in the neighborhood will be trying to get at her. The third week, she'll be going out, and more often than not is like the first week. If you are looking at breeding the beginning of the second and the end of the second week is usually the best time.

It can last 3-4 weeks. Keep her confined. Don't let her out of the house unsupervised. Get her spayed... An accidental litter of puppies will be much more expensive than a simple spay. If the dog gets pregnant she could have complications and rack up an even bigger vet bill or potentially die.

Normal estrus in a canine occurs as follows: from the 1st bloody show she will be 9 days coming in, 9 days in & 9 days going out. The optimum time to breed would be between the 12th & 15th days, not to exceed 3 successive days of copulation.
