"Any religion that professes to be concerned about the souls of men and not concerned about the city government that damns the soul, the economic conditions that corrupt the soul, the slum conditions, the social evils that cripple the soul, is a dry, dead, do-nothing religion in need of new blood," King preached in 1962 to his congregation at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta.

It's a brilliant quote. What good is a religion that preaches all about saving souls then sits back and watches as poverty, republicans and hatred damn the living?

Nothing means anything out of context. This quote makes King sound like a religious fanatic who idealizes anarchy, but what he's more likely to be saying is that we shouldn't just be concerned about soul, but also the Government and Economy.

I'm not sure what to think of this, especially out of context, but I was never as impressed with MLK as everyone told me I should be.

I think he was right.

A church should not ONLY deal with souls, but should also be concerned with with it's people relationships in their community. The church SHOULD be aware of their congregations economic conditions. and social behaviors.

If not then that church would be doing a disservice to its congregation.
