Having always lived with cats and wonder if I have contracted the condition. I'm a bit worried because I often pick the cat's up and give them affection !

Don't worry.

Infection is by ingesting cat faeces.

Even if you were to become infected, you'd probably not notice it if you have a healthy immune system. At most you'd feel like you had the flu. Even then, not a problem.

I assume you're a guy, so no need to go on about the risk to pregnant women.

I grew up with (and sill have) cats too. We spoil them with kisses and affection.

Toxoplasma was for a long time a mystery because no-one could work out what is known as the intermediary host animal. Once it was discovered that the cat was such a host, the llife cycle became better explained. Toxoplasma can infect any host but is most common in sheep and cattle where it causes abortion. It is not common in man although many who work with animals have antibodies. The worst effect is if the protozoan infects the brain. Pets are not common causes of human infection.

Toxoplasmosis will give you symptoms like you have the flu with swollen lymph nodes. It is very unlikely that you have it. It usually only affects people with compromised immune systems (such as HIV, or pregnant women). You can catch it from cats, but only if you come in contact with their feces. If your cats use a litter box, just always make sure you wash your hands after changing it.
