I'm writing an editorial and need stats on
* the number of police-related shooting deaths in 2006
across the U.S. (or in Houston, Texas, if available)
* the number of police officers shot and killed in the line of duty
across the U.S. and in Houston only.

I sympathize with those who have lost loved ones on both sides of police-related fatalities, in calling for a combined coalition to promote law enforcement without violence, for the sake of both officers' and public safety. Any websites or statistics available?

The FBI's Uniform Cime Reporting (UCR) program has a special segment for that type of information - LEOKA (Law Enforcement Officers Killed or Assaulted). Here's the link to the 2005 figures:

http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/killed/2005/index.htm

The 2005 figures were just released in October 2006, so they are a little behind. The 2006 figures will not be out for a long time. The UCR preliminary report on crime for 2006 (Jan. through June) is out, but I don't think it includes LEOKA information.
