why do you think people use the [N] word? and what purpose does it serve?

It means: an ignorant person. It is not limited by the color of the skin.

Well, since I only hear Black people calling each other that now-a-days it means to me that it must not really be as offensive as they like Whites to believe it is. Either that or it's a way of showing some "power" over Whites - WE can say it but YOU can't sort of thing. Just my own personal beliefs from my own personal observations. If a word is considered offensive then it's offensive regardless of who uses it or in what context. I don't believe in double standards. I personally think it's a terrible word & I would never use it.

Its a word full of power and oppression. White people used it a lot because of superiority complex. They obviously used it on people of African decent, especially when people displayed undesirable traits like laziness and lack of intelligence.
Very few words in modern American English are loathed like the N word. It pops up occassionaly because it essentially says everything demeaning about a person in one word based on the color of his or her skin. It brings a person down to a level that no one deserves to be placed, dehumanizing people so that one may feel better.

When I hear it, I think about a lazy, good-for-nothing person. I don't think black, white, yellow or red. Unfortunately the majority of the population don't have a clue of the real definition of the word and that includes blacks.
