Chocolate contains a substance called theobromine that dogs cannot metabolize. It doens't go through the digestive system, instead, it stays in the dog. The more chocolate the dog eats the more of this substance builds up in the dog's system until it reaches a toxic level.

Chocolate-poisoning in dogs can be very severe including seizures, violent tremors, vomitting, diarrhea... and death.

Dark chocolate and bakers chocolate, which contains more theobromine, are generally more deadly than milk chocolate. But the amount of chocolate that is toxic to a dog depends on the dog's age, size, health and inidividual tollerance to the theobromine.

To be safe, NEVER feed chocolate in any form to your dog.

Yes chocolate is deadly for dogs. Some dogs aren't bothered but,I wouldn't risk it.
I had a dog that ate chocolate all the time and lived to be 13-14 years old we aren't sure of the age as we got him when he was 3-4 years old from a family that was alergic to him. The dog found chocolate everywhere he even ate almost all our chocolate easter eggs one year. I wouldn't give it to a dog tho its not worth a sick or dead dog.

It's true. This is an exerpt from the website below:

Why is Chocolate Lethal?
Chocolate contains theobromine. A naturally occurring stimulant found in the cocoa bean, theobromine increases urination and affects the central nervous system as well as heart muscle. While amounts vary by type of chocolate, it's the theobromine that is poisonous to dogs.

The truth is that chocolate can be toxic for dogs. It depends on the dog on the exact amount that it takes to get them sick. Some dogs need emergency care after just one piece. Others seem to not be bothered. Regardless unless you want to play Russian roulette with your dog, then just don't let them have any. They don't know what it is and won't miss it...in fact they really shouldn't get much people food at all. Keep the treats to puppy treats and such. They are formulated to be digested by their systems better.

Myth that everyone believes. Our dog is around ten years old and has gotten LARGE doses of chocolate on a regular basis. If it does kill dogs, he's been happily living dead for quite some time.

True, If you feed a dog chocolate it will kill them (if enough is fed).
There is a chemical in chocolate (phenethylamine) I think it is called/spelled, that is poisonous to dogs that's why they have a special type of chocolate which is in fact just coloured milk drops. Still as tasty as chocolate and half the fat making them ideal for dog training or rewarding your dog for good behavior.

Though the best way to reward your dog with treats is to take a portion of his/her food (dry food obviously) and take that with you to reward your dog. That way your still feeding him/her there daily allot-ed weight in food. Other ways to treat dogs are with a good selection of strong toys (different toys for different days). Lots of vigorous playing and loads and loads of cuddles!!!

Dogs can get very sick from chocolate. It's best to make sure they are unable to reach any that may be in your home.

"Cocoa beans contain the stimulants caffeine and theobromine. Dogs are highly sensitive to these chemicals, called methylxanthines. In dogs, low doses of methylxanthine can cause mild gastrointestinal upset (vomiting, diarrhea, and/or abdominal pain); higher doses can cause rapid heart rate, muscle tremors, seizures, and death." by snopes.com
