I own a shop, and have worked on cars all my life. As far as the best car on the market that is economical, I would have to give a thumbs up to Toyota. I reached this conclusion by keeping up with what cars go through our shop. We just don't see many of them in our shop, and when we do its not major stuff. They are cheap to operate, and most everybody I have ever talked to have gave them a thumbs up too.
Glad to help you, Good Luck!!!

New car?
Toyota Yaris.
$11,150 MSRP
Nothing else touches it for lowest price/highest reliability, plus it is surprisingly roomy for such a small car, fun to drive and peppy, safe and it gets 40 mpg.
Kia's are garbage. Check CONSUMER REPORTS and you will see which car of all those mentioned here is the most reliable. Or save yourself the time-- it's the Toyota Yaris.
The Kia may cost a little less to buy upfront, but it's an unreliable poorly built, unsafe piece of trash that will be worth 50% what you paid for it after 2 years. That is the truth.
Cavalier/Sunfire is also an atrocious car in every way. Poorly designed, uncomfortable, unsafe and unreliable. They got the "inexpensive" part right at least though.

Do you want new, or used? Do you want a big car, a small car, good fuel mileage, lots of room, four wheel drive? What do you want? Too many variables to answer properly.
If you just need a small car to get around town in, I would buy a Honda Civic. Very reliable, fuel efficient, and easy to drive.
If you are going on a road trip with five friends, I would buy a Suburban.
See the difference?

Honda no matter what year is the most reliable. Civic is more like a singles car those who go over two i would suggest the accord. Bigger and family friendly!!! It will also hold its value!!
