press the 'INS' or 'INSERT' key located on the right half of your keyboard (only once) to change the input method from 'overwrite' back to 'insert' which it should be.

in the example picture which shows a typical pc keyboard it is to the right of the 'backspace' key:

on a laptop, it is often just to the right of the space bar but also sometimes near the top right corner of the keyboard and has it's full name of 'INSERT':

everytime you hit this key, it toggles overwrite/insert mode on and off.

You accidentally pressed the "insert" key, which is above the delete key and beside the Home key on the keyboard. Just press it again and then try typing. Insert replaces one letter with another, and fills the spaces between words. It happens to all of us because the key is in an ackward place, between Home and Backspace. I do it all the time and don't notice it until my words "disappear"!
