Not if you walk it or some other exercise daily.

We had the same problem and did a lot of research before finally choosing a puppy. We chose an English Bulldog, and he is the perfect apartment dog!
They need very little exercise or space. They can't be exposed to too much heat or cold anyway, so they wouldn't really benefit from a big space or a big yard. We take him out to potty a couple of times a day, of course, and maybe a walk around the block.
He's happy and healthy, and no complaints from us either! Definitely a big dog to consider for a small space.

Please don't get a large breed dog. I get the feeling you know very little about dogs which means you have no idea how much exercise a large dog requires. (That doesn't mean you shouldn't have one) It will go crazy. Especially a "working breed" Look into small dogs. Poodles can be very cool dogs and not all poodles are yappers. The Pug is also a very cool dog. Very loving, and playful. A Dachshund (sp) might work well. Please, when you do decide on getting a dog, go to your local pound, Or animal rescue. Thanks

It really depends on how much time you have to be active with the dog. I would start out by taking a few dog breed selector quizzes. If you just search for "dog breed selector" on Google, you will get numerous sites that can help. This way you can look at the specific aspects of your lifestyle to see what breeds might work for you.
I have heard that Mastiff's actually make decent apartment dogs, they are a giant breed, but apparently do not require much excersize and are known for being fairly lazy.
Check out some of those quizzes for lots of ideas!

If you exercise it enough and spend a LOT of time with it, a Great Pyranese is content to sleep until you come home.
They naturally roam, so long walks are excellent for both of you. Mine hated walks; he just wanted to curl up in my lap (as best he could) and sleep, but he also lived as part of a large pack that hunts coyotes, so he might have just got exercise at night
They are VERY destructive if they are unhappy, since they are big enough to really rip things up.
They are a low metabolism breed, so they eat less and move less than some of the other big breeds. Most GP's want exactly one thing: LOVE. They require weekly grooming (with an undercoat rake) and shed profusely. Also, they drool considerably when they get hot.
My GP loved me more than I could ever imagine anything being loved.

It really depends on the breed. Before you get the dog make sure you do your homework. Any dog is going to need daily excercise/walk. Some larger breeds are absolutely not apartment dogs.
Most apartments require you to pick up after your pet, think about if you want to be picking up presents from a large dog before you get one.

Sure it will be cruel for the dog. If you are set on a large dog, don't get a puppy go to the shelter and adopt a med size fellow.
Puppies are SO much trouble and chewing in an apt. can cost you plenty.

I also live in an apartment and after doing my research on my favrite breed ever.... The Great Dane.... i found that they are actually very good apartment dogs. I mean, as long as they get plenty of exercise every day. Some dogs are NOT very good apartment dogs though, maybe this website will help....

Just look up what breed you are interested in, and it will tell you about it's living conditions.

Some people have houses this size and smaller.. the important thing is just for you to be commited to ensuring the dog gets the proper excercise needed daily, from walk or romps of fetch at a local park.

Personally I think large dogs need more space and possibly a yard to romp in. I'm sure your dog would love you no matter what, but he/she would probably prefer to have more space.
