if you do get a stun gun make sure it has a strap safety shut off on it. What this does is you loop the strap around your wrist and pull it tight. Then if an attacker attempts to take the stun gun away from you and suceeds the strap connected to your wrist will pull away from the stun gun and trigger an automatic shut off on the stun gun. Basically it means that a would be attacker will not be able to use the stun gun against you if he pulls it away from you.
Stun guns are very effective. They can however be lethal if a person has a heart condition, and even sometimes when no condition exists. When it comes to your personal safety and if your in a situation where you need to use a stun gun the hell with their safety you keep yourself safe and feel good about the fact that you at least tried to use nonlethal means to stop an attacker.
Several people on here have suggested pepper spray. My suggestion is to stay away from pepper spray. It is far too easy for the spray to blow back in your face or for you to somehow get in on your face in a hectic situation. Also, a comment was made on you can defend yourself from a distance with pepper spray. In most cases you will be forced to defend yourself in a very close proximity. An attacker or mugger is not going to shout at you from 10 feet away before attacking. He is going to be right on top of you when he strikes. For this reason pepper spray is inadequate for personal defense. It is useful to the police department when a person is trying to flee or resist arrest but NOT in personal defense.
Finally, get a stun gun that is good and powerfull. I have seen a number of drug addicts keep on coming at a person after using a weaker voltage stun gun on them. Get one that is going to lock up their muscles no matter how doped up they are. Also make sure to keep the batteries in you stun gun fully charged or replaced every month or so to ensure you have enough charge to drop a person.

The # one problem with stun guns is (that even in the hand of an trained expert) they have injured and killed many people. In each investigation the injury or death was ruled an accident.
The Stun gun is not an effective or safe weapon.

They kick *** but are dangerous.
Pepper spray is very effective it enough for the british police to their job well apart from a stick so I guess it should be ok for your self-protection.
I would suggest you learn self-defense instead keeping a cool head is more important than any weapon. Remember if you lose a weapon in a fight they will get it.
Wing chun Kung fu is a very effective form of self-defense for both sexes and is based on simple logic and skills. I would look to learn this it's how Bruce Lee started and I doubt he felt the need to carry a pepper spray let alone a gun.

well, i have been shocked with one (was yong and did it on a dare. stupid) and I laughed at it. if you do get one, get a high dollar one that has a ton of voltage, and you must use it on the chest to have effect and it can still cause a cardiac arrest and death. seeing as you dont like guns, maybe a baton. they have fairly long ones that collapse down to a smaller size, so you can whack someone from a distance a couple times and run. you can find them in most guns stores, and cost less than 100 bucks. good gun shops have other weapons also you might feel comfortable with. go look

A stun gun is good for self defense, but in order to use one you must be within arms reach of the attacker to use one. I work in Law Enforcement and I would recomend to someone that one of the best non-lethal wepons is a can of OC Spray (pepper spray). It is very effective from 10ft away. Another suggestion to help yourself out is to be aware of your surroundings and to be able to notice something that dose not seem right or out of place. Also check with your local Police department what is legel for you to have and carry on your person. Best of luck

A stun gun will just get you sued. Seriously, look at our court system today. There are hundreds of cases where the criminals are awarded huge settlements when they are injured commiting a crime. If you kill them, they can't sue you.
It's very silly to hate guns. Do you hate hammers, or computers, or other inanimate objects that people use as tools? Any tool can be used for good, or evil. If you must hate, hate the person, not the tool.

yes, and no.
a) a stun gun will take a few seconds of contact to stop someone. you have to activate it, and hold it against them. it's not like they pass out the second it touches them. so you'd better be confident enough to really take them out.
b) ANY weapon can be used against you if you're overpowered. what would you do if you pulled it on a guy, and he grabs your wrist and uses it against you?
c) the crackling sound and sparks are intimidating to look at. chances are, if you pull it on somebody, they'll back down, unless they're dead set on attacking you.
all in all, i'd suggest pepper spray instead, as it can be used from a distance, and will definitely blind an attacker if it gets in their face, and burn horribly if you miss the eyes.

Another non-lethal gun is a shotgun with Rock salt shells. They're actually more effective than stun-guns, because the targets think they're getting lead, instead of salt.

stun guns are illegal in some places. Sometimes they even cause death, depending on what the voltage is, and who you are using it on. You should just get bear mace, that is just as effective as a stun gun, and will guarantee the same effect without a possibility of killing the victim.

They aren't legal in many places. However, they can be effective tools for protection. They do not however have one benefit that guns (and mace also in a small way) has: they cannot be used from far away. You can shoot a guy across a room, you can't tazer him from that distance. I will tell you that tazers provided many hours of idiotic fun in college while i was studying criminal justice. Yee haw.
