How can i convince my landlord to let me get a cat. He is a laid back guy, not too-too strict, but he won't allow me to get a cat because he says there is hair everywhere then. Any suggestions to how i should convince him?

As a landlord, I allow small pets such as cats and small dogs, but there are conditions to having a pet.

1. They have to pay a $25.00 deposit for the animal.
2. They pay roughly $5.00 to $10.00 extra for the animal per month.
3. They must show proof of current vaccinations.

As far as the shedding problem. Get a cat with short hair such as a tabby or another type that doesn't have real long hair. You will need to vaccuum at least everyday and keep the litter box cleaned out on a daily (or more) basis. Good luck. If the landlord has any questions. he can do some research on the benefits of allowing tenants to have pets.

Offer to pay a pet deposit for starters - usually an extra $100 to cover his rental of a steam cleaner after you move out should cover it if that's all he cares about is the cat hair.

Second - invest in a very good vac and a steam cleaner yourself and take care of his carpets while you are there. This will also help because you can then get your deposit back in full if you've not got any other issues.

I've had cats for over 20 years and only ONCE did I not get my deposit back and all 6 of my cats have been indoor (3 at a time - I don't own six all at once!). The time we didn't get our deposit back was due to our own choice of breaking the lease when the landlord fought us over replacing a furnace that was kicking out carbon monoxide - they wanted another used one and we refused to live there.

Otherwise we've always had a decent $200 to $300 vac (check Consumer Reports for the best ones) and always either owned or rented a steam cleaner and done this twice a year - usually spring and fall. Now that they're cheap (under $200) we have one of our own and run it 4-times a year. Plus we have a $700 air cleaner from Shaklee called "Air Source" which keeps all the usual smells of owning a cat down to almost nothing. If you come into the house and don't see the cats or their furniture - your nose can't even tell there is one around.

Check the terms of your contract. In the UK there's usually a clause that says at the end of the tenancy you have to either clean the house to a professional standard or pay for it to be professionally cleaned. If you've got a clause like that, point it out to him - he's solved his own problem.

Also, you could say that he can come and inspect the house every three months or so - a lot of landlords over here do that anyway - and if there's any problem you'll get rid of the cat. If you love the cat you'll make sure there isn't a problem.

I gather in the States it's quite usual to pay an extra deposit for pet damage, and I've even heard of people having to pay extra rent. I think extra rent is going a bit far, but if you're willing and/or able to do that, do an internet search to find out the usual rate and suggest that to him.

You could offer to pay a pet deposit (usually $200-300 one-time payment; you might not get it back.) but if the answer is no, there's really no way you can push it.

It's their building, and if you're really set on a cat you can always move and find a building that is pet-friendly.

I had an apartment building once and let a girl talk me into a cat.
That cat tore up the drapes, carpet was ruined, corners of the walls were scratched. She was very unhappy that I did not return a single penny of her deposit. If you do succeed in talking him into it. Then get a grown cat not a kitten.

you might offer to pay a little extra rent or leave a deposit n say that if your cat messes up the place he can keep the deposit. but then you really need to clean well, vacuum, wash carpet, blankets etc cos cats really do shed. i wash my blankets and sheets on a weekly basis and even bought air purifier, plus i clean regularly my clothes with lint roller, clean the carpet n floor etc

keep begging him! and begging and begging and soon he will get annoyed. Also if you are at the pet shop for any reason go to the cats and play with one and stay there. Also put the kittens face in his face and say " Take me Home!" in a little kid voice and then you say "isn't he precious!!" Then make him hold him! IT WORKED FOR ME!!!
