No. It's possible that someone comes from 'old money' if their family has had a huge summer home in Long Island for a few generations. If anything, the NY 'old money' families are more linked to the Upper East Side in Manhattan. A number of Long Island people are viewed as 'white trash' even if they aren't. A lot of it is middle class even though it's somewhat expensive to live there when compared to the rest of the US.

The majority of Long Islanders are middle class working people - they don't come from old money. There are a few areas that are exceptionally affluent and, there are some communities that have high crime and a lot of poverty, ie Hempstead, Freeport, Roosevelt, Central Islip. FScott Fitzgerald's "East Egg" was a fictious town.

I have no true idea- I was born on LI in 1958 and lived there till I was 40 but I assume they were trying to impress you with some sort of snob appeal. Long Island, like any other large metro area has nice places and not so nice- hell, its 150 miles long (hence the name, Long Island).

Although it is quite expensive to live on Long Island, that certainly doesn't mean that one comes from what you refer to as "old money."
