I don't think that any of the deities I work with have a "mean" nature. I know that some people hesitate to call Loki or Set, the two classic "deceivers", but I've never had occasion to call them, so I don't know how that would play out.
I certainly don't think that a god or goddess would harm someone through your spell if that wasn't your intent. When you call on them, you are using them as a foci. If they want to do something different from what you want, then the spell just wouldn't work. And you wouldn't call on them another time, which would not be in either person's best interest.
I don't really think spells "backfire". It's just a Hollywood thing, in my opinion. Either a spell does what you want it to, or it doesn't do anything at all, in my experience.
EDIT: Kallen, that was unfair. Most people don't realize that there's a subtle difference between Wiccan and witch. You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.

Would you except an answer from someone who has studied a fair bit?
One of the things that confuses people from a western culture is confusing destructive forces with evil. For instance the death and destruction of a forest fire may seem mean and "evil". However in reality it is a natural part of the life cycle of a forest.
Working with the destructive forces in life always entails some risk but that does not mean they cannot be beneficial.
Does that make sense?
Spend some time studying the Kabbalah. It will help make sense of creative energy verses destructive energy.

As someone has already said, "destructive" is not the same as "mean". Both constructive and destructive forces appear in nature. The Christian religion (and as a result most of society) sees destructive forces as "bad" or "mean". This is not the case at all. Destructive forces are necessary. Sometimes things happen in your life that you must break free of to move on - like a bad relationship - and you just can't bring yourself to do it on your own, for whatever reason. In that case, calling on a destructive force to jar you out of your predicament and force you to change is not a bad thing at all. You're aware things need to change. Perhaps you're addicted to cigarettes or alcohol and you know it's counterproductive to your life and your spiritual journey, but you just can't break the addiction on your own. If you call on a destructive force, they can help you make that permanent break.
It's like the Death card in the Tarot. I do Tarot readings for people and whenever the Death card comes up they panic. Then I have to explain that the Death card does not mean a physical death (well, very rarely it does). It simply means an irreversible change, something that makes it impossible to go back to life the way it was. If you realize you're in an unhealthy situation of any kind but just can't find the willpower to break with that unhealthy situation, it can be very beneficial to call on a destructive aspect of the Goddess or God to give you the extra push that you need.
Hope that helps.

The Craft really and truly is "The Craft." Getting a handle on it and learning what one should or should not do is just as complicated and requires an equal learning curve to any skill you would like to learn. That being the case, I would strongly suggest that you find yourself a good teacher who can guide you through the process.
I mention this due to the black and white nature of life itself. We have light and dark, men and women, and on and on and on. To work with both aspects of life effectively requires dedication and a willingness to learn. Spirits or deities are not in and of themselves mean. It's the means by which we call and the purpose that is of the utmost importance. Plus the inherent consequences if you get it wrong or deliberately do harm.
Find a good teacher in your area so you can start off on the right foot!

Diety can't harm you if you don't call them at the right moment. The mean nature of some of the deities are just one more aspect of the diety. In Wicca we don't believe in absolute evil and absolute good. Everything has some good and evil in them, and that includes Diety.
For example: The Greek goddess Hera has a vindictive and cruel side to her, however, she has also been known to show compassion and caring.
And we find the same thing in the Elements: Fire, Air, Earth, and Water. Fire can provide heat and protection, and cook food, but it also can turn against you and burn things down.

To me (I can't speak for all Wiccans), magick works with Natural elements... and those elements are neutral. Consider that the nature that sends us flowers and breezy autumn days also sends us tornadoes, forest fires, hurricanes, floods, lightning strikes, etc. :-)
I'm not sure about the deities/spirits "harming someone if not called on at the right times." But if you make a deal with one of them, definitely keep it.

hm, well I'm a witch who isn't wiccan, so I guess I don't count then. Let me know if you actually want to hear from witches other than wiccans.
Edit: Okay cool, I can understand saying Wiccans only then, but remember, some witches don't adhere to the Wiccan tenets.
I suppose it depends on your definition of mean. Gods like Loki are trickster gods, but they help teach a valuable lesson of not taking yourself so seriously, or that we should laugh at our folly at times.
Some are spirits of justice, and you should be very sure that you're innocent or it may backfire on you. As for harming someone if not called on at the right times.. I'm not sure what you mean by that.
No matter what the nature, we learn something from each of them... something of value that helps us to grow.
We don't use linear thinking, nor are our concepts that of good versus evil..

Why do some people have a mean nature? Quite frankly, you're dealing with other beings here - beings with likes, dislikes, tempers, good moods, bad moods, etc. The whole works. And just like we don't like getting calls from telemarketers, they don't always appreciate being contacted, especially if you contact them in a manner that is different than their "preferred method."

Not Wiccan, but I do have some knowledge in this area, so I hope you'll forgive me.
Spirits are just like people really. Some are nice, some aren't. Some who are nice get grumpy about people bothering them and asking favors all the time. I am personally opposed to calling on Deities willy nilly for spells. I find this disrespectful and a sort of heresy and something many Pagans really find annoying about Wicca. You can pray to them, of course, but when you call on them it should be to worship them and/or to ask for guidence and teaching, not favors.
Everything is made of energy. You me, etc. all energy. But much of our energy is tied up in maintaining our material form so we are limited in how much we can use and how much we are connected with the other energy of the universe. Spirit beings do not have these limitations because they are not material, simple. And so they are more connected with the energy of the All. All energy, as you know, is reused over and over, it's eternal, it flows together and is connected. Magic is using your energy to make adjustments in the flow to cause certain things to manifest materially. Spirits obvioiusly can do this easier because they are purely energy with consciousness and, of course, they all have personalities and moods just like material creatures.
How they can harm someone should be obvious. They have 100% access to the energy of the Universe (though they vary in their ability to manipulate it) so they can do all sorts of things from manipulating your own energy to bring about illness (usually flu-like symptoms) or even death and they can manipulate the energy of the Universe at large to cause bad luck, etc. in the same way they can manipulate the energy to bring good things. Mind you, not all spirit beings are adept at this. It is something they have to learn just like material beings do, it is just easier for them to learn it.
I don't know what you mean about calling at the right times, though I imagine there are times when certain spirit beings are in a better mood than others, just like material beings. My ever-loving dog is a snarly growly monster if you accidentally nudge him with your foot while he's sleeping and my most beloved boyfriend is impossible before he's had his coffee.
In High Magick, Ceremonial Magick, which Wicca appears to be based on at first glance, there are a number of things that can be done energetically and symbolically to bind these spirits and force them to do your will or at least limit what they can and can't do as in the magick circle and triangle. You can also trap them in a vessel to be called upon at will, like a Djinn. I don't really agree with these practices personally.
It is better, I think, to get to know these Beings on a personal level. Then, if they feel like sending you good things, they will and they will also offer advice on how to go about using your OWN energy to bring about change according to your Will, which is really what true magic is.

I have a high IQ and excellent vision (i.e. neither stupid nor blind).
I'd be interested to see how your spells turn out. I wonder will they work? Feel free to cast any spell you wish on me.
