Most reference books list Hinduism as the oldest world religion. This is probably because Hinduism has the oldest recorded roots, which lie in Dravidianism. Dravidianism is estimated to have been practiced around 6,000 to 3,000 BCE and as such predates the Sumerian, Egyptian, and Babylonian cultures.

Every religion today most likely has some aspect of an ancient belief in its philosophy or practice, but to say that one particular religion is the oldest is naive. The reality is-- we do not know. We have no basis for comparison.

Paganism is far older then Christianity (which is only 2000 years old). Of course Paganism is an umbrella term for many different religions. Ásatrú, for example is 40,000 years old.

Yes.
and pagan means many things.
Pagan means Countryside.
The Romans, when seeking to expand the faith, decided it was too time-consuming to try to convert people who lived miles apart from each other.
So they converted urban areas, where there were lots of folks.
They then literally demonized many aspects of "countryside" beliefs.
Some things were so popular, that the popes learned to incorporate the goddesses (oh, and the gods, some of them) into saintly figures, etc.
But whatever could not be incorporated was called "pagan", good or bad.
And this applied to many very different religions, from many lands.

I'd go with fire-worship. If I were a primitive man fire would seem supernatural, powerful, mysterious, beneficial yet potentially dangerous, all the things that make a good religion. Booga-booga!
