At this time, it is a good idea to apply for your own passport, as the rules are changing .. and yes, by 2008, you will need a current, valid passport for most public transportation options ...

Hawaii is a United States state so if you are a US citizen, you don't need a passport. Just ID.
However, the rules are changing and all US citizens will need passports as IDs in 2008, I believe.

Just ID, no passport. Hawaii is a state. I think the Canada thing HAS changed already. If you'd like to go to Canada or if you are on a cruise and you stop at an island, even if it's a U.S. territory, you will need a passport.

No. Hawaii is our 50th state. Even though it is the furthest away from the mainland.
You will need a passport to fly/travel by car to go into Canada though.

It is a good idea to have an updated passport whenever you travel by air, but it is not necessary because even though you are leaving the "mainland", Hawaii IS our 50th state.

uhhhh... Hawaii is the 50th state, you know.
You need whatever ID airlines require when you fly. Right now, for US citizens, it is valid ID unless you are under 18. Easiest if it is a picture ID, but they'll take a birth certificate if you've lost your license, etc.
