i think they should put the chavs in instead of giving them asbos, that'd sort em out. and a year extra until they lose the attitude. if that means having to run through muddy assault courses 12 hours a day till they're 50, well, its a win win situation

Conscription can only really be justified in times of a threat to national security so great that it threatens the very independence and existence of the state, such as imminent invasion. As the Germans have not just sacked France and are not sitting 20 miles away from Kent, eyeing our shores with hostile intent there can be little justification for parliament legislating for conscription, regardless of how thinly stretched the army may be.
Besides the army hate the idea. We have some of the most professional enlisted soldiers in the world and abilities to do everything from peace-keeping and aid distribution to amphibious assaults, desert combat and deep snow fighting. The Generals do not want people in the army who do not want to be there.

I do not believe you will see a draft in Britain any time soon. Actually, quite to the contrary. The British Government announced recently that it was going to mothball many of its naval warships and Prime Minister Tony Blair is calling for a strategy conference in order to determine whether Britain can even continue to be a Global power. Once, up until World War I, the British Navy controlled the 7 seas, while today it has its hands full protecting the British Isles. Britain, will remain formidable, however, with assistance from the Commonwealth and its possession of a nuclear arsenal. Even historically, the British Army was supported much by troops provided by its Commonwealth partners. For example, during World War II, troops supplied by India, Australia, New Zealand, and others fought alongside British forces.

The last time conscription was really thought about as a possibility was when we were about to re-take the Falklands. I was about the right age, I believe only if our own sovereign lands were at threat, would the government think about going down that route, in the meantime maybe they should take better care and support of the Army we have. Our boys and girls serving deserve it...

I suggest you read a few good second world war books and then you may understand what conscription is all about. I don't wish to be rude but from your question it appears you don't understand why conscription was introduced in the first place.

all depends on Iran. if it kicks off with them, then i do believe some sort of conscription will come in,not a full scale one tho, maybe something like what the Americans done during the Vietnam war.

I suspect a very long time. there would have to be support for the idea since it would have to be a parliamentary decision.

It would help the country.
Of course you would have the usual outcry from the
conscientious objectors of which there would be many.
I,m all for it myself.
