Er
I am of litltle help here, but the most attractive portraits that I have is with the subject looking away from camera, with a small smile, and a neutral background.
So as not to distract from said subject
A gem or three from my sons, but I am no pro in these matters.
Whatever looks great though the lens, I go.
As for being the poser, I just do something daft like stand on a beach with a guitar and a silly hat.
It always works.
Cheers with the photography,
Bob.

Be yourself , but leave the candle blowing to the hot chicks... it gives them the pouty look, I don't thinkk you mean that, although I may wrong.
Men look good leaning against a wall or post. sitting at an angle (45 Degrees froim the camera) behing the woman ... try to keep you hands from your pockets... use a prop ie football, etc.
look through the lens into the photographer's eyes. There is so much to posing I don't have the time.... perhaps I will write an article about it on my blog.

One of the oldest tricks used by photographers used to be to make the model look down at their feet (or lap if they are sitting) and then look straight up into the camera [in other words, make them put their chin on their chest and then look up into the camers] , this relaxes the entire face and gives a more natural pose. Otherwise, don't pose at all, let the photographer just click away as you talk and go about your business - especially good for children who look awful if posed.

Two tips I know of are:-
Put one foot in front of the other to make yourself look slimmer.
This one is based on personal experience (unfortunately!) don't let anyone photograph you from a lower level - not flattering particularly around the jawline.

most photographers will take 100 photos to get the one they want.
what I mean is try lots of different things.
Digital cameras are great... no one need ever see those not so hot shots!!

You shouldn't. The best thing to do is take a series of pictures and select the best one to use.
