"onekewlpenguin" nailed it: guys don't go nuts about things like cards and chocolates.
if he's a reader, get him a book that's about the things he's interested in (this can be screwed-up pretty easily if you don't really know him, though -- so beware).
if he's into tinkering with mechanical stuff, a tool kit (some very inexpensive sets are really nice) is always appreciated. try to make it something he doesn't seem to have lots of or something he's said he wished he had.
guys prefer things that are practical, that demonstrate insight into their personality (or that at least reflect an appreciation for their "manliness"), and that are likely to be around for a long time.
if you wanna make it extra special, wrap the gift and put a card on that -- all it needs to say is something like "just a token of my love for you" to get the romantic message across as thoroughly as a guy is able to receive it.
give that sort of gift, and you'll likely find yourself on the receiving end of the lip-kiss and chocolates and/or card.
Ultimately, any bf worth having won't stay for the gifts: his real interest is in you -- and the things he says and does will reflect that. Same thing in reverse for girlfriends.

If he loves you, that should be enough unless he's one of those materialistic people where everything has to be big loud and expensive.
If it were me, I'd have settled for the card and the kiss cause that says it all right there but if you must, get him a watch so he can count the seconds until you are together once again.

Nothing. That's perfect. He'll read the card, share the chocolate, and give you a perfect kiss. What more do you want or need?!

That sounds good. Maybe in the card you could put a gift card to his favorite restaurant, and that way the two of you can go out to dinner :)

Let see you're going to give him a card; a kiss and candy a better question might be what does he intend to give you for Valentines Day.

Make up little coupons. Like "Good for one back rub". "Good for one Foot Massage". You get the idea. Depending on how far your relationship has gone the more "risque" they can be. Good Luck and have fun.

I think that is perfectly enough to get him. If he was really your boyfriend, he wouldn't care about WHAT he was getting for valentines day, but rather WHO was giving it to him! Hope this helps!

That's something you really have to decide for yourself. I don't know how long you've been dating or what they mean to you. Also, you should know your bf better than me (at least) so you should know what would really be special to them.
