you're going to pay much, much more for an automatic in Europe than you would pay for a manual tranny. Automatics are also very hard to find over there, unless you buy new. Good luck!

I'd go with the VW turbo diesel jetta. It's the only car i've tried that has the auto/stick that lets you up and downshit (no clutch), or just pop it into 'D' and let the transmission handle it.

It was an impressive car - awesome handling, and the ability to downshift and use the engine to slow the car down makes it almost as good as a stick (plus you won't ever stall it out, or melt your clutch when you park on a hill).

Get the manual... if you don't know how to drive one, you should learn... seriously, what would you do if someone you were with had a medical emergency and all you had to drive was a stick? Try to grind the gears all the way to the hospital?

Also, there is nothing wrong with rubber timing belts... As long as the engine is non-interference, they are actually better because they will do far less damage if they break.

We used a puegeot while we were there. I'm not sure what type of transmission it is called, maybe a semi-automatic. Anyway, it worked as both and automatic and manual. You might want to check out their website, peugeot.com

cut a deal with him. let him have the foreign stick and make him promise you get an automatic before you go. if you aren't usded to a stick and you sound reluctant to learn, you are very likely to wreck and hurt somebody.

Most people in Europe drive manuals. I think it will be really hard for you to even find automatics in Europe to be quite honest.

Also be aware the car you buy must meet US EPA and DOT standards before you can register it here, if it does not you will have to pay to bring it in to compliance.
