Yes, there is a difference.
A tonne is a metric ton (though it's not an SI unit, as mentioned above.) A tonne is equivalent to 2204.623 pounds. (1,000 kg).
A ton can either be a short ton or a long ton. A short ton is equal to 2,000 pounds. A long ton is equal to 2,240 pounds.

When someone in the US refers to a "ton" they typically mean the short ton. Normally a tonne ("metric ton") or long ton are specified as such; exceptions would include ships which use long tons to measure displacement, and some bulk trade which uses tonnes (MT) as an industry standard.
