IMPORTANT: Read this BEFORE you consider the Herald Square Hotel; they've been cited several times for bed bugs.

http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g60763-d93452-r6031342-The_Herald_Square_Hotel-New_York_City_New_York.html

"We stayed at the Herald Square hotel from October 16-20. We lucked out and got an amazing room on the 9th floor or so we thought.

The first morning that we were there my girlfriend woke up with bites on her hand and arm. We thought maybe there might be bugs but we couldn't see any in the bed and the room was so nice we thought, how could it be? Our second night there she woke up in the middle of the night to something biting her again. In the morning we called front desk and told them what was happening. They wanted to come up to the room and see the bites and she said she would get changed and come down but before she had time, 2 minutes later, someone from housekeeping was at our door ready to inspect the bed.

We were really annoyed that this guy came up and was going through the bed while we were still in our pajamas! When he couldn't find anything he said it must be an allergy to the down pillows. My girlfriend is a doctor and she informed him that allergy does not present like that, he wouldn't believe her. So they changed our room to a much smaller one on another floor and that room seemed fine.

Aside from irritating us by not believing that there could be bugs, the hotel staff is friendly and our only other complaint is the water pressure and the lack of hot water. The only reason we are writing this is because we know Herald Square is a budget hotel and with that comes a certain level of expectation but we paid for one of the "new queen rooms" and although they looked nice they aren't worth it. This was our second time staying there and the first time was a better experience....before the renovations. It looks nice and it should be good but it was disappointing."

The Hotel Belvedere is in Times Square - not too expensive and it's spotless. Keep checking priceline and the other online travel sites and wait for a great rate. Good luck.

Babygio,

I am going to New York in April. I booked the Milford Plaza. I got it for $157 a night. That is pretty good since I booked only 5 months in advance and it is in Times Square.
I read reviews on it and some people gave horrible review and others had plenty of great things to say.
My thinking on this is:
Since it is a trip and it is New York all I need is a place to sleep and a shower. I am not a picky girl, so I went with it. The pictures are great and I heard the lobby is beautiful.
Also, be careful when booking make sure you get a private bath, because a lot of New York hotels have shared bathrooms.

With regard to gormenghast10014 info below I have to agree that trip advisor is the way to check out hotels before you check in.

Bed bugs have become a problem at more and more hotels due to increased international travel. I stayed in the hotel at the very same time as the review that was referenced in gormenghast10014's answer and had no problem.

No such element as an inexpensive inn in NYC, except its a disgusting hostel or rat infested promote off. in case you're searching for a truly first rate position for far less then 2 hundred$ an evening, you should attempt out ner Newark Airport. My pals stayed at a Sheraton obtainable once. It grow to be about one hundred twenty$ an evening i imagine and intensely astounding. Takes about 20 min to get to the city by skill of nj transit. inn will vacation you to the practice station.

Check at frommers.com and aaa.com. Be careful when you look for hotels since there have been very unsatisfied customers at some of the establishments. We stayed at the Marriott (on someone else's account) and found it very nice and well located but beyond our budget. Good luck.
