Pits don't need any special food to bulk up. They are naturally very strong and muscley animals as long as they are getting the proper exercise and feeding. If he's simply underweight, just feed him a little more of the food you are already giving him until he reaches the right weight. You should not be able to visibly see the ribs or spine, but remember that pits are very muscley by nature...

Iams and Eukanuba are crap foods! Anything that has ground corn or corn meal as the first ingredient is GARBAGE. Corn is just a filler and won't do anything for your dog, except make it crap more. Look for something like Natural Balance or Dr. Fosters and Smith (availbe from their website). The first ingredient listed should always be a REAL food (chicken, beef, etc).

Well, you need to consider you want him to gain muscle. How old is he? Most pit breeders I know give them calcium supplements and a specific diet, which can change often and depends on circumstances. It doesn't do much good to build up their muscles if their bones and joints won't hold up to it, too. Otherwise you will have a strong, young dog in a lot of joint and bone pain after a couple of years. Check out some Yahoo groups for pits; the doxie groups I belong to are great and never make me feel dumb about any question I have, and someone is there 24/7. It is always better to ask someone who has been there, done that. Best of luck.

likely you should talk with your vet about weight control. your vet will actually have prescription dog food for animals that have actual weight issues.

however, it's most commonly believed that it's best to feed the dog moderately, and let them grow on their own, and after 2 years or more, then a more aggressive food regimen may be in order, and that's the time you may want to consider adding bulk to your dog if that's the direction that your vet recommends.

but as someone else mentioned, leaner is considered healthier, as dogs that have the sort of "hour glass" shape to their body do live longer healthier lives and avoid issues like diabetes and other weight related illnesses.

hope this helps.
