I am writing a novel, and of course it is my first novel. None the less, I know pages of books are different than the number of pages you have written in the program "Microsoft Word." How do I know approximately how many pages I have written, I can see how many 8 1/2 x 10 pages I have written, but those aren’t book size. What is standard book size and how can I know / format from my program how much I have written? Should I double or single space? Should I start a new page for a new chapter?

In my opinion, your books should be about 7 inches by 4 inches:
1) FILE > PAGE SETUP > PAPER: Width: 4 Height 7
2) FILE > PAGE SETUP > TOP & BOTTOM: 1, RIGHT & LEFT: 1
Depends on HOW you want to write, most books start new chapters on the next page, FEW books continue on the same page and just label it: CHAPTER __

Do a word count of a typical page of a book that you think your novel will be like. Then, using tools, do a word count of your document and divide the number you get by the number of words on the test novel's page.
Definitely double-space, and do start a new page for each chapter. However, don't worry about this stuff too much right now--that comes later, after you have edited it and are preparing it for submission. Best of luck!

I recall one very loose standard was to type in 10 point font, single spaced and consider each page (MS Word) roughly 3 pages of a novel.
It is not perfect by any means, but it was a general idea. I can't personally vouch for how accurate it is.

divide it in 1/2 because regular pages are about twice the size of novel pages.
