i have a 1990 escort xr3i with the cvh efi engine and only seems to rev to 4000rpm is that right?

Shouldn't have thought so - more like 7,000 at least. Fear engine is knackered.

Yea something not right there,the rev limiter shouldn't be cutting in till around 6500rpm.Is it definitely the limiter cutting in or maybe something else that's the problem.As a guide look at your rev counter,where it turns red is where the rev limiter would come in.

the car should rev higher than that, sounds like a timing problem, look at a workshop manual or get it looked at by a mechanic.

in the low gears it should pull right round to 7000 rpm in top gear you should just be able to touch 6000 rpm give or take a touch

It may have some kind of rev limiter on it, and it may have gone koo-koo on you.
