i would like to have software on my gps like the kind they have on mapsource, but i'm not really prepared to spend over $110 just to do it. any thoughts?

Actually, you al;lready paid for those maps, we pay every year with Taxes. The Sattelites that run the GPS are Taxpayer Funded DoD or NASA.

You get what you pay for, darlin. It cost someone time and money to put all that stuff together. Don't you expect to be paid for your work?

free maps no. You have to buy any maps that you want to put in the unit. You do not have to pay for the use of the GPS signal as the other uninformed answerer has posted.
