It is the same as murder. Exodus 21:22, 23 says, “And in case men should struggle with each other and they really hurt a pregnant woman and her children do come out but no fatal accident occurs, he is to have damages imposed upon him without fail according to what the owner of the woman may lay upon him; and he must give it through the justices. But if a fatal accident should occur, then you must give soul for soul"
Notice that the text does not specify who dies, whether the mother or child or both, although the context from verse 22 indicates that it applies to the child. The punishment was a soul for a soul. This is the same punishment for those who murdered intentionally. God takes life seriously and considers even the life of an embryo sacred to the point that a child not yet born had the same value as an adult man.

Never does it define abortion as such.
Indeed abortion used to be a common practice even amongst christians until it became a big deal somewhat recently. 100 years ago you were far more free to have abortions than you are now.
Also during the time of the bible, child birth was a very dangerous process. 1/5 of mothers died in childbirth and even more babies died (or kids died young very often). The bible was written when there was little regard for the life of children, so it wasn't a big deal. It didn't matter if kids had souls, they just went straight to heaven.
Again it only became a big deal as people became more sensitive about life and some nutjobs developed some idea that abortion was "murder."

The Bible doesn't say "Abortion is murder". It does say "You knew me before I was stitched in my mother's womb" in Psalms. That, we feel, establishes life at conception. The Bible defines killing another person as murder, and since according to the Bible, life begins at conception, abortion is murder.
It's like this: Taking a life = murder
Life begins at conception
Abortion = murder
Right or wrong, that's the belief.

Actually, your God condones abortion, he's not against it at all!
"And when he hath made her drink the water, then it shall come to pass, that, if she be defiled, and have done trespass against her husband, that the water that causeth the curse shall enter into her, and become bitter, and her belly shall swell, and her thigh shall rot: and the woman shall be a curse among her people. And if the woman be not defiled, but be clean; then she shall be free, and shall conceive seed." (Numbers 5:27-28)
This nonsensical ritual, prescribed by God, to a woman suspected of infidelity, must undergo the drinking of a vile concoction made of bitter water and dust from the floor of a tabernacle. A priest calls a curse upon the woman's head to insure that if she has acted in adultery the drinking of the liquid will cause her to have a miscarriage. If she comes out clean, then she shall conceive.
Regardless of how ridiculous this procedure seems, any person who believes every word of the Bible must come to terms with the realization that the quoted God here sometimes authorizes abortion.
(also see Num. 5:1-25)
And then of course there's "Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones." (Psalms 137:9, KJV)

Scripture specifies the prohibition contained in the fifth commandment: "Do not slay the innocent and the righteous."61 The deliberate murder of an innocent person is gravely contrary to the dignity of the human being, to the golden rule, and to the holiness of the Creator. The law forbidding it is universally valid: it obliges each and everyone, always and everywhere

Abortion was unknown in Biblical times. It is a sin, however, because it is the deliberate destruction of God's most precious creation, the human being.

Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: Matthew 5:21
I do not see a time frame of when killing is okay.

if a woman threw herself down, to end the life within her, she was still considered a murderer.
