I'm getting my first tattoo tomorrow and I'm extremely nervous! Can anyone share their first tattoo experience with me? Suggestions on how to relax are appreciated! Also, are you allowed to take a pain reliever before you get a tattoo? If so, what would you recommend?
Thanks! =)

Sorry, I forgot to mention: I'm getting a very small, one-color tattoo on the inside of my arm right underneath the crease from my elbow.

I got my first tattoo for my 40th birthday. It was a design I came up with and had it put on my calf (where the skin will never sag). It is a multicolor design with feathers and leaves. There was some pain involved as when a tattoo is done close to a bone it will be more sensitve. Whereas in the location that you mention, it shouldn't hurt as much.
Don't take any pain medication - it can actually mess up the tat. Also use whatever lotion they recommended. When I had my tat done they recommended Nutragenia (sp) unscented lotion to keep the tat moist, but I've heard there are better products available.
Also don't let the tat be exposed to the sun as it can make the design blur over time.
As to relaxation - try deep breathing - concentrate on your breath and center yourself. I did this when I had mine done - I also do that when I go to the Dentist. Listening to music can help too.

enjoy your tat

I got my first tat on my 18th birthday and I brought a friend with me to talk to while it was getting done, since then Ive gotten 2 more tattoos... I dont know anything about taking a pain reliever beforehand, depending on the size and detail of the tattoo, you probably shouldnt need it. Maybe afterwards when its a little sore, but probably not before. No need to be nervous, it really isnt all that bad.

My first tattoo(s) were two small stars. One on either hip.

I had myself very worked up before I went to get them, and once my tattoo artist started, he said he could feel my body relax and become less tense, because the pain was not as bad as I was expecting.

I'm not sure where you are planning to put your tattoo, so I can't really share any personal thoughts on what kind of pain you might expect... but as far as pain relievers, just take one or two Ibuprofen maybe half an hour before you go, and then another one or two several hours later.

It's not going to help very much with the pain of the tattoo, but it might help with the swelling.

Good luck! :)

i jus got my first tattoo 2 days ago, and it wasnt that bad, the only part i had to take a break was during the coloring...i have a dreamcatcher between my shoulderblades...it took a lil over 2 and a half hours so its fairly large. but as long as u relax u'll be fine :}

also on pain relievers, i suggest taking Tylenol cause it isnt a blood thinner like motrin, advil, asprin and ibuprofen. or alcohol. but i really dont kno if pain killers really make that much of a difference really, i have a bleeding disorder that my blood doesnt clot as fast as it should so im only allowed to take tylenol. but ure Endorphins will kick in and help with tha pain.

hope this helped and happy tattoo-ing! souinds like a beautiful tattoo :}

thats a rough spot and there will be pain, but it won't take long and will be over before you know it. just do some deep breathing and prepare yourself for the worst so that when you actually experience it you will know it is not so bad.

eat something first, bring a drink with you. stay hydrated... these things are going to keep you from fainting if you are a lightweight. if you take any pain reliever just keep it mild. if you go in there on a vicadin or valum then i would hope that the artist would send you on your merry way, i know mine would. i don't think pain reliever is necesary.

good luck to you!

It depends on your pain level. I is noever good to take any kind of pain reliever or drink and alchol. You don't want to thin your blood. I got my first tatto, November 2005, on my shoulder. It didn't hurt, just annoying. I went with both my sister N laws and they got their on their lower back, and said it hurt Bad!!!! Just before you go and when your there, stay calm, and relax. After a few the area will go numb, and not hurt as bad. Good luck!!!!!

My first one i was very nervous also but it wasn't as bad as i thought it would be. Best advice I can give you for relaxing is take deep breaths and try and get a comfortable conversation going with your tattooist. The more relaxed you are the better it is.
Hope this helps and good luck!

I got my first tattoo in Hawai'i. The guy who did mine made me feel really comfortable a relaxed and he explained everything that was going to happen so that I wouldn't be freaked out. As he was tattooing me, he would make sure that I was doing ok. He was so nice! If he wasn't all the way in Hawai'i, I would go back to him for all of my tattoos!

Well I got my first tattoo on May 6, 2006 and it was three stars on my foot, It really didnt hurt badly, It mostly felt like a safty pin rubbing up and down on my skin, however i got my second tattoo on June 6, 2006 on my lower back and it hurt alot. So it depends on where you get it, on how bad it hurts, but good luck
