active is through solar pannels converting energy that can be used for heat and passive is the heat created naturally by sun on a surface

Passive would be a solar hot water heater that doesn't require a pump to circulate the hot water; it just heats the water before it goes into your hot water heater. Active would be one that requires a pump to circulate the hot water.
