He just barks at every one but me and a few close friends, He barks at only and all men. Why? What can I do to stop it? Is there a healthn issue that would cause him to bark for no apparent reason.

Bichons at a very early age should be socialized with ALL types of people (men, women, children) and other animals. Puppy groups are good for this, as well as taking her out to the park, pet stores, and so forth.

It is harder to correct the problem when they are older. Look around in your area for group training classes, other pet owners, and clubs.

Correcting the problem as soon as you can. Bichons have a very long life. The older they get, the harder it will be to change a behavior.

But remember never to hit or yell at a Bichon. They are very smart dogs and do much better with gentle training.

Our little Corgi did the same thing. It was a big problem because my office is in my home and it would happen while I was on business calls.

We got a Citronella collar from PetSmart. Every time she barks, it emits a spray of citronella up towards her nose. She hates the smell of it and she'd stop barking immediately. Then, after she stops barking, I'd praise her and say "Good Girl! Be Quiet!" It only took a few days for her to make the connection. What a difference it has made!

We take the collar off when she goes outside so she can bark to come back in. It took her a while to figure out that outside barking was OK, but she's got the hang of it now.

This is our (my vet clinic's) paper on barking: hope it helps

You don’t. Barking is a dog’s natural reaction to changes in his environment; he should be allowed to indulge himself as long as he’s reasonable. However, if your dog annoys you or the neighbors with his noise-making, there are some steps you can take to minimize the nuisance. The solution could be as simple as a change of scene for the dog or as complex as the development and implementation of a behavior modification program. Some dogs bark at everything they see and hear, a characteristic that flops like a lead balloon in an apartment or attached condominium development. Some dogs will stop barking if they cannot hear or see the interlopers. So, if he is an in-the-house noisemaker, put him in the kitchen or laundry room with a crate or bed, away from windows, common walls, and hallways, and turn on a radio before leaving the house. Classical music stations may work best; they have fewer disruptions by commercials with doorbells and other noises that could trigger barking. Confine him in the room with baby gates in the doorways, not by closing doors, so he doesn’t panic. If he barks while you’re gone because he is outside and wants inside or if he’s an outside dog and a habitual barker, change of scene could work as well. You could bring him inside the house or build a run in the basement to keep him in an area without so many distractions to bark at. The radio will help mask the sounds and confinement to a small area may help him settle down.
When you’re home
If your dog is bossy or suspicious, he may bark and may become a nuisance when you have a visitor, when joggers go by, when the kids get off the school bus on the corner, or when the next door neighbor gets a UPS package or has the landscapers in the yard for three or four days – even when you are home. A bossy dog is often easier to cure than a suspicious one because he may simply need to be reminded that he’s not in charge. It takes longer to get the message across if you have ceded your authority in any fashion, but it can be done by making the dog work for every treat and cuddle and love tap he gets. He should sit or lie down or do a trick on command before getting anything he wants. Teaching a suspicious dog to bark on command so you can then teach him to stop on command works as well. Carol Lea Benjamin calls this the “serendipitous” method of dog training by which the owner names a behavior in order to control it. The trick here is to know what triggers the barking so you can get it started yourself , then, just before initiating the noise, saying the name of the command. Here’s how it works. If Ranger barks when someone knocks at the door, repeat “speak, speak” just before you knock on a wall or other hard surface. Tell him he’s good and give him a treat. Repeat several times a day until he understands that “speak” means bark. This process focuses his attention on you and gets ready for the next step – teaching him to quit barking. When you tell Ranger to speak and give him his reward for doing so, follow it with “Enough” or some other word that means “knock-it-off!” Once he gets the idea that he must stop barking after the treat, you can begin to use “enough!” when he barks at real interruptions. Be sure, however, to allow to alert you to the presence of whatever and praise him before you tell him he’s done enough.

I owned a Bichon Frise { bitching Frizzy, is what we called her ]
Her name was Apricot... Got her when she was 8 weeks all from a breeder. She barked at my husband until she got use to him. But barked at everyone that came near or in the house, after awhile she got use to people in and out of my house and would lay next to me and be quite.

Give her time she is still a puppy and just letting people know that she is watching over you.If she is barking at males all the time you might ask the person you got her from, something could be causing her reaction to the male scent to cause the barking...
Otherwise just keep telling her no when she barks and it Will stop
Good luck

It is not a health issue. Do the men he barks at sporting mustaches and beards? Is the dog primarily around women? Take the dog out on walks, take him near lots of people and get him socialized. He is probably territorial if the barking occurs mainly at home or in your car. I've never had a dog that wasn't territorial, so it must be something I do to cause this, but I don't mind it. It lets other people know not to approach my car or home.

there is no health issue here. What you are dealing with is a socialization issue.

If your dog isn't seeing men every day, then he is becoming frightened of them. Any time a dog isn't exposed to something on a daily basis, they become frightened of it (i.e.Thunder Storms).

What's most important here is how YOU deal with your dogs behavior. If you say something in a sweet tone (i.e. "It's OK honey he won't hurt you") you are encouraging this behavior to continue. You can correct this with noise corrections, THEN praise. Make a sharp noise, like clapping your hands, or using a shaker can and a "No". When your pup looks around like what happened, you then praise him (cause now he's doing something you like).

The next step is to have a special treat that will ONLY be used for this. The man is to give him the treat. The key to this is 1) The dog MUST want the treat you are offering, and 2) The dog must be hungry.

Take your pup out to many places that men will be, to socialize him to them.

ONLY a vet can tell you if there is no health problem. If you think there is a chance his behavior is due to an illness (and I do know dogs and cats for whom this is the case), you should contact the vet.

Socializing a dog is not as simple as exposing him to people and giving him some treats. It is very easy to overwhelm him and make the problem worse. I recommend that you contact a trainer who can work with you to change his behavior. Without seeing him and knowing why he is doing this (he is being territorial, being protective, is frightened, is overly excited, etc.) it is impossible to give the best advice. Your vet should be able to give you a referral, or go to www.apdt.com and do a search.

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tr.im/uwPmA

If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.

It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.

He's probably just protecting you. You could try to socialize him with more people, mainly men. You could try training. You could also try a bark collar. Good luck.
