The term Mormon, is a Nickname for a member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints
It was the name of an ancient prophet who wrote the history of his people on Gold plates about 600BC to 400 AD
In AD1820 Joseph Smith a young boy of 14 found the Gold plates in Palmyra New York and translated the plates into English it was published as the Book of Mormon in 1830

Because they are not Christians....they are Mormon because they believe in the book of Mormon. And because they do not believe in the Jesus from the Bible. The Jesus from the Bible didn't come back in the 1800's. We're still waiting

They get the name from a supposed angle name Moronnai who supposedly read the golden tablets to Joseph Smith from behind a curtain and he wrote it into the Book of Mormon.
