You Christians seem confused, and therefore I am confused. Some say yes some say no. Some say he is, and talk about the holy trinity. Some say he wasn't and that he was the son of god, but not god, which would make him......? Here's a bit of bible for ya:
John 8:54 Jesus replied, "If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me. 55Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and keep his word. 56Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad."
57"You are not yet fifty years old," the Jews said to him, "and you have seen Abraham!"
58"I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!" 59At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.
Is there a defenitive answer here, or is this why there is dozens of types of Christianity?

There is no definitive answer. No one agrees on this, even within the Christian faith. Some will quote scripture to prove he was NOT God, and the others will quote scripture to support he WAS God. Then there are those who will try to explain the Trinity. You will never get agreement among the masses on this question.

YES:
Jesus is a GOD
John 1:1 - "...and the Word was God."
NO:
He is not the same as his father
Col 1:15 - Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature
John 14:28 - "...for my Father is greater than I"
Mark 13: 24-32, "But as for the day or hour, nobody knows it, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son; no one but the Father".
John 8:42 - Neither have I come of my own initiative at all, but that One sent me forth
Matthew 20:23 - this sitting down at my right hand and at my left is not mine to give, but it belongs to those for whom it has been prepared by my Father
Note:
Matt 28:19 - Uses the word "and" when baptizing signify 3 separate beings.
John 5:7 - The text of this verse should read, 'Because there are three that bear record.' The remainder of the verse is spurious. Not a single manuscript contains the Trinitarian addition before the fourteenth century.
Matt 10:33 - "...before my Father which is in heaven." Before my father denoting they have to judge by his father not Jesus, also Jesus was on earth at the time when his father was in heaven denoting two separate beings.
John 3:16,20 - Does not mention God's Spirit.
(In marriage two people are like one but we are not stupid enough to believe they are the same person)
ANSWER:
John 8:54-58 Shows correctly Jesus is “a” GOD and existed in Heaven before the Jews knew of him.

The people that deny the deity of Christ arent Christians at all. Jesus said if we deny him before men he will deny us before the Father. (Mt 10:33)
Is Jesus God? Yes. Is he Father God? No. Is there more than 1 god? NO. The trinity states that God is 3 in person (Father, Son, HS) and 1 in essence. Is Jesus God the Father? No, they are different entities. Are they one in spirit? Yes.
The Trinitarian belief is the only that can explain the nature of God given what we have in the Bible. Jesus said there was only 1 God and that is what the Bible teaches as a whole also. Yet he himself is worshippped 6 times alone in Matthew! If only God can be worshipped, then was Jesus blaspheming when he accepted worship? NO! Jesus was worthy to be praised because he is God the Fathers son and shares in his deity yet they are one God. Think of "GOD" as a title and not a person, thats what i do and it helps. That is where most anti-trinitarians trip and stumble. They think we mean to say that Jesus is God and the Father is God and they are 1 person and that is false.

Because they do not understand the nature of the incarnation; hence they think that for Jesus to be both God's Son and God Himself is a contradiction. That Jesus is divine is evident from verses like Colossians 2:19 ("For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily."), 1 Timothy 3:16 ("God was manifest in the flesh"), and Revelation 1:8, 11 and 22:13 with Isaiah 44:6 (Jesus said, "I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty" and "I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last"; Jehovah said, "I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.") Unlike man, God is everywhere-present, all-knowing, and all-powerful; hence, He is able to maintain a divine existence and a distinct human existence and yet still remain indivisibly and absolutely One (Deuteronomy 4:6). "With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible" (Matthew 19:26).

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God and the Word was God... vs 14 And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.
According to this, yes, Jesus is God in the flesh of man. If you are confused about other verses then you need to read more to see how this works. You cant get the full story by only reading portions.

Jesus IS God THE SON! AND WAS THE GOD OF THE OLD TESTAMENT!
All of the O.T. prophets communicated with the only God they ever knew- and figured this God was the only God! This God of course, was Jesus Christ!
1Co 10:1 I want you to know, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea,
1Co 10:2 and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea,
1Co 10:3 and all ate the same spiritual food,
1Co 10:4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock WAS CHRIST!
Despite Moses, Abraham and the other prophets who spoke to the OT God- none were aware that it was none other than God the Son, Jesus Christ!
John 1:18 No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father's side, HE HAS MADE HIM KNOWN.
Joh 6:46 The only one who has seen the Father is the one who has come from him. No one else has ever seen the Father.
So yes! Jesus IS GOD (The Son).
And His God is God the Father:
Joh 20:17 But tell my disciples that I am going to the one who is my Father and MY GOD, as well as your Father and your God."

Jesus is certainly the Son of God. What you have chosen from John can seem confusing. Yet, to resolve the tension and confusion one must read this passage with an awareness of the nature of Jesus the Christ. He is human and Divine. Whenever you read of Jesus not knowing something (e.g.) The end of the ages or displaying some trait that seems below His divine nature (My Father glorifies me), it is because Jesus is speaking from His humanity. If you read passages where He is speaking with full authority (in John it is usually when Jesus says, "Amen, amen I say to you.") He is speaking from His Divinity.
And so, there is no confusion. Jesus is God (as the prologue of John proves) Jesus is the Son of God and speaks from His Divine and human nature. I hope this has been helpful to you.
May the Lord bless and keep you. May He let the light of His face shine upon you.

Dont forget:
"Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death - even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." Philippians 2:5-11.
Some people think it isn't right to quote Paul concerning the divinity of Jesus, but what is ironic is that Paul wrote his epistles before the actual gospels were finished, and since Paul's writings pre-date the gospels it goes a long way to show that Christ was, from the beginning, considered divine. It wasn't as if later theologians "invented" it.

Revelation 13:8
And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship Him,
whose names are not written in the book of life
OF THE LAMB SLAIN FROM THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD.
Jesus is that Lamb that was slain and that Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. Jesus was with God and the Holy Spirit at Creation and created. Jesus is just as much a part of God as God is a part of God and as the Holy Spirit is a part of God. God is so awesome that men try to put God in human form and He is human form as Jesus and so much more. We were told to Baptize in the name of The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit so it takes the 3 to make God Almighty. Matthew 28:19
John 10:28,29,30 Jesus said
And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
My Father, which gave them Me, is greter than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of My Father's hand.
I and My Father are One.
Jesus gives eternal life and God the Father gives eternal life. We all know John 3:16
Jesus said "I and My Father are One."
The Father, The Son Jesus and The Holy Spirit are One God.

The answer to that is when did Abraham see Jesus, and what did he call him then?
Genesis chapter 18 says he called Him LORD.
Isaiah 9:6 calls him son and Mighty God (El Gibor)
:
Ps 110:1
The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.
In Hebrew David used YHVH and Adonai, both of the forms of God.
Isaiah saw him in chapter 6:1-10 as John 12:31-39 tells us.
There are many more, hope this suffices for now.
