Unfortunately, there isn't much you can do to ease the pain without medication.
I had braces on for almost 3 years, and during those three years, they used a special kind of retainer to break my top jaw twice. So I know a bit about discomfort due to this sort of thing.
Unless you're good at ignoring the pain (which I was not), I would recommend taking some Advil or Tylenol, or whichever mild pain reliever you prefer.
It's not like you're taking "drugs," and they should help with the pain considerably.
Normally the pain only lasts for short periods of time, until your mouth starts to adjust to its new settings, so you shouldn't need to take a very large amout of any pills.
Good luck :)

I wore braces years ago when the bands went all the way around your teeth and were applied with orange cement. YIKES! Probably the only thing that is still the same is how sore your mouth gets. I remember this---if you take a few thicknesses of gauze and fold it so that it fits your mouth and then bite down on it and hold the bite, your mouth feels NO PAIN! It hurts pretty badly when you are first biting onto it, but once you get a firm bite grip, there is no pain. My orthodontist actually gave us these rubber-like bite guards to bite on. It really does work. Just work up the nerve to bite down firmly even though it will hurt at first, then ENJOY the relief!

Some people clench their teeth. I like to hang my jaw open, so my teeth are relaxed. Then I drink a hot tea, followed ba an ice cold water! The combination relieves my pain very well. :D Good luck!

I have seen many to stand up to the pain, and won the mental battle. Those who can't, take refuge in recommended medication.
