This is a symbol for the sun god on an Assyrian stone sculpture from about 850 B.C. This sign was one of the attributes of the national god Assur. The symbol is now used by terrorist groups a.k.a sons of god they sure are dangerous.

The only thing I can think of is that it might be a type of map symbol. Although most map symbols used to show enemy positions are a diamond shape, a sun shape may be used to express a particular object like a known IED placement. There are thousands of map symbols and would be very hard to track down a particular one if it's not commonly used.
