You can contact the airline directly at the airport which you are to travel from. They will be able to advise you on the availability of seats. Find their contact number in the local telephone directory or here online.

Call the airline directly and ask. The "view seats" map on the website isn't an accurate way to judge as some seats are held back and blocked even though they are not purchased yet, and may be released closer to the date of travel; and some seats are not eligible for upgrading. Depending on how many seats are left in first, you may be able to upgrade with status (frequent flier preferred levels) but not miles, or miles but not cash, or not at all. And the number of seats available for each kind of upgrade changes as the date of travel approaches; for example, 2 weeks before the flight, there are no seats available for a mileage upgrade but 2 days before, some are reclassified and made available because there are not many elite frequent fliers scheduled on that trip.

Well, on continental.com, what I usually do is run a search with the same flight details as the one I have. Instead of economy, choose business/first. Then when you get the list of flights, you should be able to click on "view seats" which shows how many seats are available. I'm sure its the same way for other websites.

If you have a simple economy, restricted ticket, an upgrade is usually a lot of money unless you are applying mileage points. You might want to include some details on what type of ticket you are currently holding.
