Does he have developmental disabilities? If not, take him to the doctor to make sure there is no medical issue. Has he ever been potty-trained? All animals learn by preferring one result to another. Make him prefer the results of pooping in the potty to pooping in his pants. Immediate rewards like stickers can work but then you have to give a lot of stickers and keep giving them for a while. A more long term reward like a new bike when he uses the potty for two weeks straight or something like that complete with a big poster in his room can really make growing up seem cool.

I completely understand what you are going through. My 11 year old has the same problem. I think it is from constipation. I know this is also embarassing for the kids so it isn't a deal of potty training. Whoever asked that is not very considerate. I would try and add some extra fiber to his/her diet. That has helped my son a little but it hasn't helped completely. I have a doctors appointment scheduled for him. I'll try and write back and let you know what I find out. Good luck!

Have you taken him to the doctor yet? There are actually many medical reasons why this happens. I can't remember the names, but I did a lot of research on this. my 7 year old has recently stopped pooping in his pants, so I know how frustrating it is to deal with. There are a lot of chat boards about this frustrating behavior. There is a medical terminology for it- I can't remember it sorry- but the kids hold it in for so long that their sphinter goes numb and they really can't feel it come out until its too late.

In my personal experience, ,it was a long road to getting it to stop. We tried everything. Finally realizing that he really didn't have control over it anymore helped calm us down. We began to make him clean up his own messes, took away privledges, and made consistent times for him to sit on the toilet until his body learned to give him the proper signals again. We also let him have more control over other everyday decisions. My husband and I are both bosses in our proffessions and used to making all the decisions, this in some part probably led to the original holding it in behavior.

its such a hard thing to go through and so misunderstood by so many other parents that look at you like you did something wrong.
You didn't and you can make it through this frustrating ordeal.
Best Wishes to you!

My nephew had a problem with this and it was caused by his being constipated badly. This kept him from being able to feel when he went. I would advice checking this out.
