I got a three year old dog from a family who couldn't take care of her anymore. The son in the family was a long distance runner and trained the dog to run with you. I would like to take her running, but I have seen people do it different ways. I have seen some people use one of the retractable leashes and let the dog run a fair ways ahead of them. And I have seen others using shorter leashes and keeping the dogs right by their side. I don't have this families number, so I can't ask how the son trained the dog to run before. Which is the better way, or does it not even matter?

that depends on where you are and what your dog is like. if you are in an off-leash dog park and your dog is really friendly, then you don't really need a leash at all. when running alongside the road, keep the dog on a short leash to keep it out of danger. when on a public, no car walkway (not a sidewalk- I'd go with short leash on a sidewalk) then you could use a retractable leash. they sell retractables that have buttons that lock the leash in place, so you could buy a retractable and also have the option of a short leash. Good luck!

It probably doesn't matter that much. It really depends on how the family trained it. Most people keep their dogs on short leashes because if a dog runs ahead of you, it's showing dominance. The only problem that may occur w/ a long leash is that when a dog is ahead, it often stops and sniffs the ground to look for prey out of instinct.

Greyhounds want safety and so they come to be very hooked up to their proprietor additionally they're sprinters now not lengthy distance runners. I do not suppose it might be reasonable on your puppy while you become a member of the military except you suppose you are going to nonetheless be competent to have interaction with it on a every day foundation. What approximately a puppy which may be very folks pleasant as good as athletic? I'm pondering a lab might be a well alternative. This approach while you go away for the military it is effortless on your puppy to be at ease with a care taker.

For myself, I have the dog on the left side running "with" me but never ahead of me.. I am the Alpha.

With a bicycle they run on the "right hand side".. again.. with and beside the bicycle.

Or you can use a Springer attachment with a leash on the dog... that is what we use when trialing for the AD with our dogs.

GOOD LUCK

I also have a running dog and I would use the retrackable one because if you get tiried and you would like to walk a littlr bit your dog could still run. Oh and I am not saying that you can't run! :)

It doesn't matter, but I would keep the dog at your side. That way, if you spot trouble, you can stop and keep the dog away.
